Those are the old school iBooks. Replaced by these.

You can't buy them new anymore so eBay and the like would be your best bet. I can't remember what spec they went up to but I imagine they'd be fine for writing up essays etc.

            What were they called?

            (for searching on ebay)

also are there any specialist shops which I can go to where I might be able to get one?

            Thanks.

Also how much do they go for?

They are called G3 iBooks and were released in 1999 with the original iMac.
They all seem to be a 300mhz G3 (processor), so I wouldn't suggest paying more than ?250 max seeing as you can get a faster, new G3 for ?500 from PCWorld.
. They did release a limited edition iBook with a 400mhz G3 processor, the rest of the specs remained the same.

The thing to bear in mind is that they can only read CD's, and 1 USB port so only very slow external CD burners can be used. They only have a 6GB max hard drive too.

Personally can't see why you'd desire one. Get a more modern mac
Take a look here for all the macs ever made (nav bar on the right). Pretty cool for mac fanboys like me TBH
Can also provide pixs for the coolest desktop computer too

                  Meh.
If you'd ever seen one for real you wouldn't say that
                  The thing's tiny.

Yeah, if you see one for real it has lots of pretty hairline cracks in the transparent plastic. They really add something.
