    Problem with dlink dsl-604+ router

Im on adsl and I thought id buy this wireless router so i could share the net connection between my 2 comps. So far ive tried to set it on just one machine with it hardwired in and Im havin a lil trouble.

Im on bt openworl broadband. Managed to input all my details into the setup (username password n all). In the dlink status bar it says "connected" so i know all the settings seem to be right. Now to connect to bt it seems i have to go through a connection wizard to input my details so i connect to bt. I tried doing this and nothing happens. I get a "Error 678" message.

The only other choice i've noticed is when i go into network connections there also seems to be an "internet gateway" option also. I tried setting up a connection there but it asks for external and internal tcp or udp port numbers. Me being a bit crap wit this kinda stuff aint got a clue on how to find out what it is.

I've searched on the web for guides and tutorials but I just cant seem to get this blooder router connected to the net. For now looks like im gonna have to stick with this ugly green manta fish like usb modem for a lil longer >

You don't need to "connect" in that way at all... routers work by providing an internet connection over a network

Error 678 in dial up networking implies "no answer"

if you set IE to never dial a connection what happens?

This "internet gateway" is how windows interprets a NAT router.

ok removed the connection im adding so i done it like the tutorials and instruction booklets says and still i cant seem to get anywhere. updated the firmware also and still no progress. dunno why it aint working on the status screen it still says "connected".

      Phil.

EDIT: I went through a diagnostic check on the router and heres the results:

      ADSL Line - Pass
      PPP Test - Pass
      ISP Connection Test - Fail
      DNS Test - Fail

dunno if this helps narrow down the problem.

There's more to getting an ADSL connection to work than username and password

That's what's going wrong according to the diagnostic.

This kind of info varies from ISP to ISP...

        Is it PPPoE or PPPoA?

        What type of authentication?

        What are the ATM settings?

You need all this **** to get connected when you buy a 3rd party modem/router that isn't preconfigured by your ISP

        What status screen says "connected"?

Dunno bout the ATM settings how would I find it out.

as for the status screen when u access the router you go into internet explorer and type in the default addy (192.168 bla bla) to bring up the settings of the router. At the bottom of all the stats where it says "connection status" it says "connected. Heres all the details

          VPI - 0
          VCI - 38
Encapsulation - PPPoA VC mux (also tried PPPoA LLC that works too)

          login details all correct

          Authentication - chap
          Connect on demand - enabled
          idle time - 0
IP Control - get IP from ISP

          PPP information:

          Connection Status - Connected.

Not sure what else i need to configure or what information you need that might help me out.

          Phil.

Looks like you've got the basics but have you set up:

NAT (interface between LAN and Internet)
IP Routing (Where to route the traffic)
            DNS (Where to find machines)

            I'd check in that order

            Regards
            Marty

those are the atm details you need!

OK, lets assume the router is connected but you're not getting internet

The first thing you should check is does your router have a valid IP address?
