    saturn memory card

Having lost all my old save files I'm looking for something to prevent it being a problem again. Does the official sega memory card use a battery?

I don't think it has a battery in it (not one you're supposed to replace anyway)...but you'll still need a battery in your Saturn as only some games will save directly to the cartridge.

There's no battery in the memory cart. And it's frigging huge - you'll only ever need one.

If you've got a game that won't save to cart, you can turn your Saturn off and on quickly and transfer the save - providing you're quick enough turning it back on, the save won't wipe from the internal memory before you get the chance to move it.

I've only ever had two problems with it - Radiant Silvergun doesn't seem to have a save to cart option and you can't transfer the save to it (it seems to corrupt the save file), and saving a Tomb Raider game to it wipes the entire cart. Other than that, go for it - it's pretty much essential.

What would happen if I took out the battery from the Saturn -- would it ignore the Saturn's memory and just save to the cart; or would the game just not save?

I ask because my Saturn memory is now full, and games seem to be skipping the Saturn and just saving direct to the cart; so wondered if it'd just be easier to take out that CR2032 (or whatever it is) battery.

Depends on the game, only some offer the option to save directly to the cartridge. Most just ignore the fact that it's there

            Why not replace the battery?

Games would still save to the Saturn, but after you power off the saves would be lost.

Ta. Just thought I'd ask, y'know... If I could have bypassed the Saturn memory and just saved directly to the cart it would have saved me periodically copying the stuff across.
