Right. I tried a couple of 3rd party file explorers. One looked like it used the explorer core to carry out things so was the same, and the other crashed. ^_^
I`ve jsut turned indexing off on that drive, and it looks like its made a huge difference (takes 5 seconds to open picture tree instead of 15), so it looks like the main problem was the indexing service (hopefully/touch wood/fingers crossed etc). Ta for teh help d00ds. ^_^
