Power Stone on DC - won't work?

I just had a quick blast of this on my DC and now it won't load at all. I have a PAL DC and PAL version of the game - the disc is perfect without any scratches. Upon loading the SEGA screen it boots me back to the Dreamcast options menu. Earlier is was whirring away like a maniac so I had to power off then back on again.

Anyone know what the problem could be? I haven't moved the DC at all.

This happened to my [scratched up] Sonic Adventure once. I used a DC-X to boot it and for some reason it worked when I tried it normally later.

Burnt out laser? Powerstone is quite a sensitive game when it comes to dodgy lasers, as is JPN Soul Calibur.

Try increasing voltage to your laser (there's plenty of guides online for this).

It's a fairly new-ish DC and it plays VT2, Grandia 2 just fine.

I have exactly the same problem with my PAL copy of Dead or Alive 2. The same thing happened to my PAL Soul Calibur too, but a couple of months later it mysteriously started working again.

              Everything else works OK though.

I had a PAL Sega Bass Fishing disc that did the same thing. The problem was that a tiny bit of plastic on the inside ring had snapped off (>1mm in width) and the spindle couldn't keep hold of the disc.

I bought a new copy when I got the opportunity to, but as a temporary solution I put some blu-tac covering the spindle and pressed it hard onto the disc It actually worked perfectly fine when I did this but it was too much hassle to do every time.

I'm only firing an idea here but try these two things.

First, make sure your DC clock/date are set correctly. (At a guess maybe an old save game having a different time might stop it from booting properly)

If that doesn't work then try booting it without any of the joypads plugged in. I came across a dodgy DC one that had a faulty controller. Caused a similar issue.

I had loads of trouble with my DC resetting. I know this doesn't seem to be the case here but I moved the power pins forward and now the system is fine.

Come to think of it, I also had exactly this problem with three other games I bought second-hand. I returned them all as faulty. None had any visible scratches or markings, and nothing I could think of would make them work.
