    PSone RGB problem

I got my modded PSOne back today with a RGB cable.
Thing is, I barely get the RGB to work. Most of the times it outputs composite and sometimes RGB and sometimes the RGB appears very reddish.
Is this the PSOne or the RGB cable malfunctioning?
And can I fix this easily?

    It could be either.

A new cable is cheap enough, if the socket on the machine is duff that might be trickier.

Try another rgb scart cable first, to see if its the cable at fault (or try your cable on another Playstation).

Ok, what you say makes sense
Too bad I don't have another Playstation or RGB cable around...

What I don't understand really is that that Gameshop told me that I need to use a RGB cable in order to get colour with NTSC games, but when I use the composite cable I just get colour with NTSC games as well.
Or is this story only true for tv's that don't support NTSC?

Even weirder it got when the shop owner told me that only NTSC games will output RGB, but this seems nonsense to me. I assume that both PAL and NTSC games will be RGB if I got a RGB cable hooked up to my PSone.

Anywayz, the shop owner isn't the technical guy. I had hoped to talk to the tech guy today, but he won't be around today, so that'll be after the weekends (drats!).

        Thats right.

        Thats right too.

Sounds like you're getting slightly duff advice.

The Ps1 will only output ntsc on a pal machine in colour, or vice versa, using an RGB cable or if the machine has been internally modded to output Pal (colour only) all the time.
This was only available from around version 5000 or above, may have been later or earlier I am not sure.

How can I see what version I have?
It is a PSone (not the older the model).
It's modded for NTSC games, I don't think it's modded to output PAL all the time (not that I know anyway), but with the standard A/V cable I just get colour with NTSC games.
            So how can that be?

Look on the bottom of the console and see what the number is

SHCP-1000 through 9000, on the models that dropped the S-video, composite and audio out you can link a wire so it will output Pal all the time, if you are playing NTSC software in full colour using composite or S then yours has been modded for this, and as most tvs will handle pal60 you get a colour picture.

Just realised that you said it is a PSone, these can all be modded for Pal colour, Press the menu button on your tv when you are in the memory card screen, if it is moddded I beleive that the boot screen/memory card screen is also 60hz, by looking at the menu of your tv you should be able to tell if your tv is in 60 hz mode as it should look a little taller than when in pal(50hz).

if it does you know for a fact it has been modded.

But can I also reason like this: its a modded PSOne that displays full screen and colour with a composite cable, so it's PAL 60?

Ok, got a new RGB cable today and still no RGB.
                    Guess it's the PSOne then.
                    Anything I can do?
The guy from the Gameshop said it can't be the PS (or it has nothing to do with the mod chip, something like that).
Fact remains I don't have RGB and I want it

You probably have a dodgy connector on the ps1 then.

Try out your rgb scart cable with another ps1 and your TV to make sure.

If it is the ps1 it might be easiest just to buy a replacement.

Do you run your other consoles through RGB?

If so (and if you have a splitter) you can force RGB mode by leaving another machine on while you play your PS.

If you can explain the problem I'll try and make suggestions, things to check:

Is it really an RGB cable? Check inside to make sure you have the R G B lines connected and it's not just composite > SCART. There are also 2 other fuctions which are important: Pin 8 should have a wire connected to it supplying around 5v which will switch your TV to AV mode, pin 16 should be connected to pin 8 via a resistor (75ohm) this will tell your TV to display RGB.
(I mention this cos just recently I came across 2 RGB cables from 3rd parties with pin 8 and 16 wired the wrong way round)

Is there a switch on your cable? Some cables have a switch which switches off the 5v line - thus not switching your TV to R G B mode.

Have you got your cable connected to your RGB enabled channel? Usually this is AV1.

I checked the wires and R G and B are connected and have 220 capacitors on them and all. This was also the case with the first cable.

Funny you mentioned the SCART box, since the only way I got RGB a few times with the first cable was when I connected the PSOne with the composite cable on one side of the SCART box (it's a 2 way SCART box with switch button) and then when the PS was on, switch the cable with the RGB cable which was on the other side of the SCART box and then switch the channel of the SCART box.

But after I while I couldn't get RGB at all and same thing with the new cable I got today.

Another thing was that I today I got my Q back from Play-Asia!
So I hooked it up with the RGB cable from Lan Kwei and the image wasn't that good, so I was wondering what the deal on that was. Now I found out this: my Philips widescreen tv has 2 SCART connectors which both support RGB. Only SCART 2 provides inferior quality.
Same thing as with the SCART box. One port has bad RGB output, while the other does a perfect job.

In any case, in the end I found out how to get RGB, but it's kinda weird. I discovered this RGB cable has a DVD/Game switch (found out before I read that Saurian said that ).
The Game mode provides RGB output, BUT the annoying thing is I have to switch to DVD and back again to get RGB, else if I boot in Game mode it will output composite.
A bit silly, is there a way around that?

In any case, thanks for the help so far

                          EDIT:
I dunno about pin 8 and 16, but do you think they were wired the wrong way with my first cable? Since it seemed a RGB switch problem why it didn't work...
