Potentially stupid PS2 question (regarding the drive)

I'm tempted to buy a PS2 from a friend, but he say's that some of the earlier models needed some drivers on a memory card to allow the drive to read DVDs and DVD based games. He say's he's never had these drivers and consequently has only played CD-ROM based games.

Is that true? and if so where can I find these DVD drivers?

    Cheers.

I'm not an expert, but i've never heard of these drivers or had any troubles with my PS2 ( I got it the day of release - pre order )

Probaby what he mentioned was that the first series of JPN machines needed DVD drivers on the card so you could watch DVD movies. The machine would play DVD games regardless.

The DVD drivers on a seperate card were never needed for PAL/ USA first series machines.
I've had launch PAL and USA consoles play DVD games no problem.

Ah OK, it's an early JPN model actually - if I only need the drivers to watch DVD films then I don't really mind.

        Cheers.

Yep, a mate of mine has a v1 Japanese PS2 and has the drivers on his memory card. AND the machine still works fine amazingly enough!
