Xbox dvd drives (quick reply needed)

Hi, Im on the verge of buying a new dvd drive for my xbox because the one in it is rubbish, and im replacing it with the samsung one which is meant to be the cream of the crop but my question is: are the drives universal, because I am 99% certain that this drive is from out of a US xbox, will it still function in my PAL xbox... without a chip/with a chip when I get one fitted?
