    Best dpad on xbox controller.

hi, I saw a madcatz ps2 controller today that looked like a snes controller and (prob for the impending release of street fighter) and was wondering if there was anything simillar on the xbox. If not then what 3rd party controller has the best dpad on it for playing 2d games?

    cheers for any advice.

Use the Saturn pad and the Magicbox covertor.

controller S is fine unless you're really picky (i'm not but then i can't pull off lightning 10-hit wonders) and considering it was designed for japanese gamers it is smaller and the buttons are better placed for fighting games although the analog L and R buttons mean you'll be resorting to dreamcast-style button layouts (i put mediums on the triggers as i rarely use them).

i'll use any pad and i'm not fussy but i am pretty picky when it comes to playing SF...

saturn with magicbox is the quickest way to gaming bliss although i'd prefer hacking my saturn pad up and wiring it up to an xbox pad and using that as it's more responsive (only slightly mind you) than a converter because:

      a) the buttons and dirs are just on-off switches
      b) the pad converts these on-off states into signals to send to the console
      c) a converter converts these signals to other signals for other consoles
      d) you can see why this will be slightly less responsive
      e) i know neogeo pads dont have a chip - they just send the on-off states to the console
      f) this is beyond the scope of this thread so i shall stop here

btw whats this about streetfighter!? oh... is it 3rd strike on PS2?

yeah sorry made myself a bit understood, was just talking about why madtatz had chosen to release an old skool joypad on the ps2. I jsut find the controller s d-pad unconfotrable. Not really into seroius combos or anything, im just getting my xbox chipped and plan on reliving some of the old 16bit classics and im sure my fingers will hurt using the controller s's dpad.

          lol you weren't misunderstood m8

yeah come to think of it the controller S's dpad is a bit stiff, even for my liking. i guess i was comparing it to the big xbox controller...
i've given up on 3rd party pads as they seem to get overly extravagant, or something always suffers - you may get good analog sticks but crappy dpad or vice-versa. the buttons may click loudly and have a lot of travel, triggers feel weird etc etc (not good for SF).

i think getting an arcade stick would be a bit extreme in your case (i built one and now i dont use is as its sooo damn big. the panel pic is sweet though did it myself :P ). If you don't mind going the converter route Halo's idea would be best.

If you're adamant that you want a pure xbox controller, then i doubt there's anything on the xbox that is made for beatemups (the GC owners have that hori snes-style pad). if someone knows then i'm sure they'll post

they should, considering SvC and KOF are coming out (on Live too) and anything that comes out on Live is automatically pushed my MS as high-profile (hey, it'd get me to sign up anyway) so someone may release one but that'd be later in the year

I had the exact same problem with Xbox controllers, I found it impossible to play the games I wanted to with that controller S and it's stupid D pad and weird buttons.

I either used a Dual Shock or Saturn pad for shoot em ups and used the Hori Xbox stick for beat em ups - the Hori stick is no way as good as the ones they have done for the other machines but it's OK (had to adjust the tension a bit)

Best solution imo is to get hold of a Hori Soul Calibur 2 stick, a Snes style PS2 controller and a convertor to run them - or get one of these:
