AVG trojan nonsense

AVG started popping up last night telling me I'd got a trojan or something (can't remember what it said now, but it said it was located in C:\System Information (something along those lines), a folder which doesn't even exist) and I should run a full scan. So I did and it found nothing.

When I got up the same message had popped up about 4 times over night. Did a scan on all drives/ partitions and still nothing. Ran AdAware, apart from a few cookies there was nothing.

It's there mate. But basically, the area AVG is referring to is your System Restore folder and for some bizarre reason, AVG can't clear the virus from that particular folder.

To clear it, goto your System Restore program and turn it off, reboot your PC and perform another scan. Switch the System Restore function back on and everything should be fine. By turning the SR off, Windows will clear that entire folder.

In addition mate, I'd seriously consider changing your Anti-Virus program, I used AVG then I discovered Avast! and that's MUCH better mate, not only will it pick everything up, but it does everything AVG can do and then some. And best of all, Avast is free!

avg is stupid i had it and it said i had nachi virus or something but what it thought it was detecting was the source code of avg

i use antivir now and its much better

Silly AVG!

When I uninstalled it, it told me there was a virus in the vault and did I want to deal with it. I said yes and it promptly opened a completely empty vault for me. Mugu!

Never mind, I've installed that Avast! thing now. Very nice front end, looks like Sonique player or something, and there's ****loads of settings for maximum tweakage. It still didn't find this trojan that AVG was piping on about though (it's either disappeared of its own accord, or AVG was talking rot), and it (Avast!) seems to take an age to scan single large files (eg .avi files) for viruses.

Other than that, it's pretty nice, just got to get used to it's posh interface.

I installed avast last night... can't find a way to schedule scans like in AVG (which I have never had any probs with) on a regular basis unless I buy the professional edition..

I may go back to AVG.

Anyone else got any free virus software worth checking out ?

for firewalls.. I also recommend sygate personal

I've been using AVG for almost a year now and it saved my PC and that of a friend's (mine: more than) once. I can only recommend it highly.

Same here wouldnt touch anything else now avg is much better and also is free

I use AVG and it's always been fine for me.

Remember that some files are hidden in normal bootup mode, even when you have the folders set to 'view all files'. Some files infected by viruses will only show up in safe mode. If you get a virus warning from a file you can't see, boot to safe mode and delete the file manually.
