    Quick compression question(Winzip/Winrar related)

Can WINRAR compress self-extracting files correctly? I'm trying to send a customer of ours a copy of AVG antivirus to solve a problem in the short term, before we re-sell them a copy of Norton, but they are on a slow line and the 6-odd meg file is taking an age to transfer.

WINZIP doesn't want to compress it; just wondered if RAR would before I download a copy to my office machine. Cheers.

You can never compress .exe's by too much anyway, normally by <10%.

Can't you just send this customer a link to the AVG download?

The only way to find out properly is to give it a try I prefere WINRAR and have found it to compress files smaller than WINZIP, as far as I know it should work.

Chad: Heh, nope. Various reasons (mainly linked to stupidity).

Compressing the file at all would be a step forward. Winzip won't allow you to compress the file at all, not even by a small percentage.

A self extrating exe would be compressed anyway so trying to compress it even probably wont work. It may be worth unpacking it locally and splitting and sending again.

Try using Powerarchiver instead of Winzip, it is very similar but can handle more file types, and tends to be a little more forgiving.

Theres no technical reason why you can't add a self extracting archive to another archive, its just winzip being arsey.

I assume by not compressing it, you're doing it through the explorer (right click) options? I've just compressed one 'ere by using the main interface and drag/drop. You could do right click->new zip file and then right-drag it onto the zip, click add.

              But yea, it'll do it.
