Steel Battalion - Mission 4: Battleship

i simply can't beat this f****** battleship in mission 4. i've tried countless times, all routes and gave it all i had! but one of it's main gun salvos always hit me and i died almost instantly.

is there anybody who has got a 100% reliable strategy to bring this hell machine down???

    thanks in advance!

I have a pretty good strategy:

Use a Scareface VT and equip the sniper cannon. It's not as powerful as the Decider with its twin rifles, but the extra range of the main weapon will benefit you against the battleship. Buy at least two supplies.

At the beginning, conserve ammo for the SR by using the 120mg against the pelicans at the beginning (the moving missile platforms that come from the left hand side of the road).

Take out all the enemy VTs first (this should be pretty obvious). Before tackling the Battleship, if you're health isn't at 3 or 4 then resupply. Try and take out the gunships with the 120mg as they can shoot down your supply chopper.

Edge forward towards the Battleship with your view trained in on the main big guns. As soon as the Battleship guns come to life, you are in its range (and equally it is in yours). Stop your Scareface and put the gear in reverse, ready.

Keep firing your SR at the main guns. Use zoom in and whenever yous see the guns flash white, sidestep to the left or right to avoid the incoming fire. Keep firing away until they blow up and stop firing

If you get hit and take serious damage, either hit the sidestep pedal to shoot backwards or the accelerator to walk backwards out of range of the guns. Resupply if necessary and try again.

Once both sets of main guns (fore and aft) have gone, the rest is easy. Simply pick off the two towers from afar. The middle guns can't hurt you from that range (even if the missiles hit, they do no damage). Make sure when the battleship finally explodes that you are a distance away as it can take you with it.

If you get too close to the battleship (although you shouldn't need to) and need shelter, there is a warehouse to the left of the battleship that is indetructible. You can hide to the left of it and resupply in safety.

Brats, you've earned my respect. that sounds like a pretty good strategy to me. i'll give this a try, or some more

have you already finished it? and are there more missions of this caliber waiting?

ps: i've bought the Steel Battalion Strategy Guide from Bradygames and found it a complete waste of money! so, everyone out there, be warned!

          Sniper cannon?

The mission isn't that complicated, just make sure you take the gunboats out on the way up (the yellow dots on the water, they fire guided missiles) and stay to the left of the map. When you get to the ship, head straight for the corner of the area, next to the warehouse. Just side-step in and out, destroy the main cannons (use zoom). When they're gone, that's it, you can't be hit from that position 'cos you're outside the effective range of the mini guns. You don't really need the resupply, but take it just incase you're RUBBISH

Yes, there are many good missions to come. I've completed it all the way thru, on all difficulties.

i've tried this countless times but the battleship's guns always managed to hit me somehow.

but i've finished the mission today using a combination of both strategies. the sniper gun works well here because it has lot of firepower and the best range. the warehoese provides cover but the guns can hit you if you stick your head out too far! i manged to destroy the two front guns from the backside of the warehouse! just shoot the installation blocking the way to the backside and snipe in on the guns which are hard to recognize but much easier to hit if you know which altitude and direction you have to fire. the third gun is a peace of cake. just walk the way around the ship to the backside of it and take it out in a quick strike!

Ah, just sounds like you were getting the timing wrong then* You don't have to walk around; there are only two (main) guns that can hit you from the warehouse position. Change the line colour if you can't see the targets. To sink the ship, you can destroy (all from the stationary position):

              2xmain cannons
              2xhull plates
              5xrear guns
              2xbridge targets

I have a replay with me sinking the ship in an m-Vitzh (without resupply, no damage). You done it, now to get stuck on mission 6 (or 7, the one where you go into the mountain base)

*edit: Could also be you're not side-stepping properly. It's an analogue pedal, press it a little and you'll side-step a little. Don't over heat (check your dials...) and you can quickly jump in and out.
