    Tell me about Xbox modding

Ok kind fellow, I get my Xbox tomorrow and would like to know what benefits modding it would have. The different options available, what features are involved and the price of each would be lovely.

    Thanks loves.

    I my modded xbox.

It has a nice EvoX menu, and a 120gb hdd. I never have to take my games with me anywhere because everything is backed up on the Hdd. Also, its tops for emu's

You're really best off talking to Saurien regarding modding options and prices Olly, as he certainly knows his stuff ( it's vital to get good info too, as the Steel Batallion issue with a recent chip caught a few people unawares ).

As for benifits, Sarkster summed them up quite nicely. Bigger hard-drive optional, which enables you to backup games directly to it ( slows down loading time, you don't have to worry about misplacing the discs ), and there are some great emulators on there, playing Alien Breed on Superstu's Amiga emulator was great fun.

Saurian's a tad busy, so any information in here would be appreciated.

Ok, well im far from an expert on these things. I was sweating bullets installing the hdd upgrade. SO instead of giving you duff info, ill give you this url. the site has absolutely everything there that youcould possibly need to know.

          enjoy...

To be honest sarky that site seems intimidatingly esoteric for me. I just need a simple list of features, and which chip is best..

Well, I can only really comment on the modchip I have which is the executer 2 lite. So far it has been fine, it was installed by ZeroRisk of the forums, although if you are considering doing it yourself and arent too confident with a soldering iron there are no solder versions available which attach to the xb mobo with pogo pins.

There is an option to add a switch so you can turn the mod off (for XBlive) though I seem to recall someone mentioning that M$ can still detect the modchip even with it switched off, but you may want to check up on that.

Once thats installed and flashed with the latest bios (if it isnt pre-flashed you can find all the new stuff on usenet) then you are literally ready to go.

With the mod switched on, your xb will play imports and *cough* "backups".

What I did with my machine was to rip out the original hard disk, and install my own 120gb hdd instead. although to do that you will need EvoX or similar which is basically an alternative to the M$ dashboard.

Now when I buy a new game for my xb, I put the disk into the xb drive, ftp to the xb from my pc, grab the files on the game disk, and recopy them back to the large partition on my xbox and play them through EVoX.

I also have a media player to watch DivX/XviD and a couple of emus on there too.

Also d/l able is a multiregion dvd player too.

As I said before, I actually know very little about the modchip stuff, but in the absence of anyone who knows their stuff this is the best I can do really.

Thanks a lot. You gave me what i wanted - a brief overview of a certain chip. I'll take this into consideration, along with other chips, and do further research on them all.

There is no point - they all do the same thing. I use Xecutor2s as they are cheap and I can install them in 10 mins, for import gaming and applications it doesnt matter what you use.

I've had a quick look, but can't find any info on Steel Batallion and chips. What was the issue with this game and chipped boxes?

also...to install a game, instead of ftp'ing to the pc and then back again look for some file managers, i use boxplorer to quickly copy a game onto my hard disk.

One thing I'm unsure of is can you still use xbox live if you have say a 120gb hard drive? The thought of me having all games installed with no faffing about is so very tempting.

Yes you can but the modchip has to be switched off when your online, the HD must be locked and the machine must default to booting the original Bios.

What all that means is :-

                          1. Use a tool called ConfigMagic to lock the HD. Evox will work now whether the HD is locked or not but the original MS Bios checks that the HD is locked and wont work without it.

                          2. Use the newest Evox Bios, one that doesnt have to be named xboxdash.xbe (the default name of the original Bios).. so basically the original Bios can co-exist with the Evox Bios. When the modchip is on it tries to load the Evox but when its off it loads the default xboxdash.xbe.

Thats it basically and you can play online without any problems. I am running a modded PAL xbox, 80gb HD, Latest Evox Bios, Executer chip and I have been playing XBL on it with no problems since the US launch.

I'm using a modded PAL X-Box with Xecuter 2 Lite with a 40gb HD. I use it on Live without problems, just make sure you get a switch installed.

I got it done by www.premodded.co.uk (i took it to him in Warrington) it took about 30 mins including copying over MAME, Snes and MD Emulators & Roms.

How much space do Xbox games take up on the HD - How many would I be able to fit on a 40Gb/80Gb/120Gb?
