    Crystal Xbox's, noisy HD?

I recently bought a new Crystal xbox, but compared to me old xbox (which is a standard one), the HD is very noisy indeed. Is this normal or do i have a potentially faulty one?

    Thanks,
    Danny..

Sure it's the hdd that is noisy?? I've got a couple of Xboxes and the one is very, VERY noisy. The other is quite as a mouse. The kids Xbox (crystal) is the same. Just Microsoft's wonderful, consistent hardware manufacture, I guess

My standard Xbox is really noisy, but the Crystal one is considerably quieter. Luck of the draw, I guess.

Iv got a green xbox and a crystal one and i do find that personally the crystal xbox is a lot louder. Couple that with it having the crap drive and my green one having a samsung drive im a bit pissed!

From listening to XBoxes (don't ask), it seems the noisy hard drives are the Western Digital ones and the quiet ones are the lovely Samsung ones (with the black rubber suits). I haven't seen any drives by other manufacturers...post if you know of any (eg Maxtor)
I had a 10gb Samsung in mine which i unlocked and sold to CeX for 30 quid and then bagged a 120gb Samsung from eBuyer for 60 quid. The Samsungs have noisekiller technology (no idea but they are quiet) and so my new drive is just as silent as my old one.

So basically, Samsung is doubly good for your XBox (the dvd drive is sweet and the hard drive is silent)

Samsungs have bearings swimming in fluid and are indeed the quietest drives I know, The Spinpoint series I would recommend to anyone.

Can i put a samsung hard drive in without chipping the console? Im keeping one chipped and one virgin but the virgin crystal xbox is a lot louder....

If it's not chipped you won't be able to use more than 8Gb. Which begs the question why would you want to put in an expensive 120Gb HDD for the loss of a few db?

I'd get it chipped at the same time (or do it yourself) it'll open up what you use your Xbox for no end.

Just to add, my crystal xbox is noisy too.

In fact it is that noisy, it sounds like something is wrong lol

It is possible but it's rather tricky to pull off and involves copying your xbox eeprom and fiddling with stuff and I'm pretty sure you'd need a modded xbox to put the files onto before making the swap anyway...but it is possible. It's to do with the whole xbox locking the hdd thingy (xbox-scene has more info)

and superkully, the reason i mentioned doing it (upgrading the hdd) was due to the fact that from what I'd gathered, the Samsung one would be quieter. To prove my point, I initially put a Nikimi 80gb in (rebadged Maxtor) and it was pretty noisy. I swapped it for my mate's 60gb samsung (rubber, just like the 10gb one). He didn't mind the extra noise as he has a v1.0 xbox with the gfx card fan which is louder anyway, and he doesn't mind the extra noise for an extra 20gb!

So Samsung won me over in that respect. I'm sure there are hdd's by other manfrs that are silent but I just bought mine based on experience.

So yeah, it would be silly spending that much to quieten the thing down but you said it yourself - it'd open up the xbox's potential no end. I don't know what I'd do without my xbox if you can recoup a bit back from selling your 10gb hdd once you've upgraded, it'd be better (cex only gives ?10 now...)

lol. xbox is really expensive to get chipped with all the trimmings (i did mine myself) but it pays for itself in due course. Mine has anyway

It's a spinpoint btw, 5400rpm goodness. I don't believe in using 7200's as they get hotter than the 5400's (i heard newer 7200's are cooling down so i'll soon change my mind) and most ppl start putting extra fans and whatnot in the xbox (or speeding the xbox fan up a bit). Not my cup o' tea. I replaced the crappy DMA33 cable with a snazzy UDMA100 cable and the difference is noticeable.

My crystal one is my first xbox and it can be heard at night when there is no other noise. So i dont know how quieter/noisier it is.

I do know that it is FAR more quieter than my previous ps2. Man that was noisy.............

                            lol. it most definitely is

as for noisy ps2's, mine is a v5 and it's well cranky! noisy as heck compared to my xbox, especially when playing CD-based games - although the xbox is stupidly noisy playing CD's if it's reading the inside of the CD (the only time that happens though is when I'm using the CD cleaner).

I think my DC and GC are the most quiet fan-based consoles I have...of which there are four
