I know you void your guarantee/warranty if you start chipping a PS2 or something, but what if I import a US PS2 and it breaks down? Is it still under warranty?

No, most warranties will tell you that they are valid only in the 50 Continental United States and Canada.

The retailer you bought it from can normally return it the manufacturer for you, but expect have to pay al of the shipping costs.

But there are always shops in the UK who do PS2 repairs.
