The actual clients you use dont improve torrent speed at all, its more how they are configured that makes the difference. I use Azureus as I like its GUI and functionality.

Oh, so this is how you get decent download speeds using Bittorrent. Finally, I now get estimates in hours rather than days. 50KiB/s suits me fine, thank you.

Torrents are amazing. Your upload speed is proportional to your download speed. Simple.

But upload too much, and your download speed drops. Get the balance right, and you get 65k/s easy on 512Mbit.

I use the default python client and I get great download speeds... you just need to open the correct ports on firewall/router and occasionally throttle the upload speed a little.

Boog, even on the best 512k connection you'll never get 64KBps...

Damn firewall. Somehow the thing got reset, and so my speed drops back to 5KiB again. Must remember to sort out these rule wotsists.

tbh, I usually throttle upstream to 10k/s anyway, so I'm not lagged too much when playing online.

Still pull the 40s and 50s down, which suits me.

The most common cause of slow speeds is not having a port open, the guy who started this topic - that is probably your problem.

From looking at the above screenshot it seems like your computer may not be 0.1 (run a ping test to find out) , your router may be giving you addresses dynamically for instance. Other than that I cant see the problem, try rooting about on google for your routers name, should turn up faqs etc.

You do know thats bs dont you? As you can upload at 3k and still download at a good 52k (on 512k)

I'm currently downloading a few TV episodes of a program whose title includes the numbers before 3 and 5, but although I've got a 1MB connection, the torrent's download only seems to be around the 35/40kb mark, with my upload at around 30kb. Now, I'm new to Bit Torrent so I haven't really much of a clue what I'm doing. I'm using the standard client from the Bit Torrent website, and I've put the settings at DSL/Cable fast.

Considering some of you seem to be regularly boasting about 60kb downloading on a 512MB connection, any idea as to why mine is currently so slow?

There are currently 60 peers and seven seeds (with it being around that area for some time), and my upload rate is set to 40kb with a max upload of 6. Are they handy tips from some of you frequent users of Bit Torrent who can help me increase the speed without restarting the torrent? Or am I just going to have to sit it out?

It depends on how many of the peers are ahead of you in % downloaded. 40k dl is ok. Sometimes I get 60 on BT but it varies.

Well I'm sat behind ZoneAlarm and a router (Netgear). I've opened the port range within the router but surely I shouldn't need to do anything with my firewall? Never get really high BT speeds to be honest. Usually they are all about 2-10 kbps with the only thing being I can have five or six on the go at once. Don't use it for much though 'cause never know where to look :-(

charlesr - I get it now. The more I download of something and the nearer I am to the full percentage when people ahead of me have finished, the more I should be able to upload and download. At least my download rate doesn't appear as bad as it first seemed.

iloveannie - It wasn't overly hard trying to locate what I wanted to download on Bit Torrent. I'm just more concerned about having to download something for 20 or so hours (as it looks like now) and then my connection messing up at around 90%, even though its generally always on.

Knowing my luck, that may just happen.

Torrents are resumeable so you wont have to start over again.
