Xbox controller USB mod is easy

Just spliced mine onto an old mouse's USB connector so I could try Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (A mate gave me his PC copy which I'd put off playing as I wanted to play it on console) and it was a piece of piss. There's some cracking drivers for it here.

I know you can buy convertors, but I had a spare controller and it took me all of 5 minutes. Easy mod, and a great way to get a decent PC controller.

Good on ya. I did the same (and vice-versa so i got kb and mouse on the xbox too) and the converters people sell are just the same anyway - there's no chip to decode anything as there isn't anything to decode as such - it's USB through and through.
The driver you posted is interesting - the guy also has a driver for the IR remote!

another good one is XCtrl - it has its own control panel that lets you set different options, and you can test out each button's analogue sensitivity (buttons glow brighter as you press harder - good for proving to your friends that the analogue really does work!)

I'm guessing you could also make an adapter out of a controller extension cable? That would mean you could still use the pad on the xbox.

Do the drivers let you copy files to/from an xbox memory card in the pad?

I did the same. I can now use my Hori EX Stick with my PC, and keyboards/mice with the Xbox.

Sliced up the small controller breakaway cable and a USB extension cable, then wired up the right connectors, cost less than a fiver.

mem card is a bit tricky and involves delving into the registry.
i can't remember where i read this, but basically the idea is this:

once your joypad is set up properly and the drivers work, insert a mem card. windows will recognise it and ask for drivers. what i did for mine (it's a ?4.99 thrustmaster from gamestation) was to download the action replay software from www.codejunkies.com and edit the .inf file (it contains all the info for windows to know which driver to install, all drivers come with an inf file)
you need to look in the registry to find out the ID of the mem card, and you basically copy this ID number and paste it into the inf file.
Now, when windows asks for drivers, point it towards the Action Replay's driver folder (created upon installing) and it'll carry on from there.

When you want to copy stuff to/from the mem card, you just do it with the Action Replay software

Sounds confusing but I really can't remember where I read how to do it. If I find the site(s) I'll post here (if jiroczech is cool, if not i'll just PM you)

            That's fine by me!

So what's the yellow wire in the XBox lead do then?

Cheers billy, that'd be great! I'll be picking up the bits to make an adapter soon.

AFAIK the yellow wire doesn't do anything at all.

apparently the yellow wire is something xbox-specific. i've read on various pages that it may be used for some kind of controller identification, or maybe it was put there for future developments (headset?). either way, as you'll have read, it's not needed for the controller/mem card to work on the pc

I made one this weekend as well, very easy, cheap and simple to do

Here's a couple of pics of the finished job...
