Yeah as far as I can tell that's exactly it. The chain seems to have to hit him after it has reached the desired number and anything else doesn't count. Seems to be anyway.

Glad to see I'm not the only one struggling to improve their scores I did post in the First Play thread about the Caravan individual stage mode bosses being equivalent to the maybe third path (especially on levels 5, 6 & 7), couple are as tough as nails, having 60 energy and the like

Anyway, couple of improvements from me, will update leaderboard in an hour or so, nice to see some more people getting into this great game.

Thanks, crikey, I had 58 seconds left with my top score, so stage one came in at 4 minutes 20, I suffer too much with "here comes the boss, panic" syndrome, plus am obviously not getting quickens/time extends quick enough etc etc.

yeah thanks for the time info venom.

What do quickens do then? because i thought they just speeded your ship up so wasn't too bothered about collecting them.

Quickens are a must for 4mil+ score, it increases the amount of enemies on the screen + if you have max Quickens - the enemy which drops the time increse appears 3 at a time.
