Had another go and finally sorted a decent Area0 buzz. Still behind everyone else though

Can't see how I'm ever gonna breach 1200buzz. Mind, the Red Mecha did need quite a lot of shooting at in order to bring him to blue which meant I had to back off a couple of times. Do I shoot at him at all in order to buzz the max out of him?

Anyone got any advice for the mini-boss? I can get 1150-1300 pretty much at will, but can't get into the mid/high 1300's at all.
