Any ideas what a good role is to start with then? I was told RDM last time.

Preferably I want a character that can hold itself when solo'ing, but is also valuable in a party.

Same advice as last time. RDM (Red Mage) and BLU (Blue Mage) are both jobs that can solo some heavy duty stuff but also highly sought after for parties (RDM moreso).

NIN (Ninja) also has some heavy solo abilities and again is highly sought after for parties.

BST (Beastmaster) is the traditional 'solo' job but because they have the strongest reputation as being soloers they don't tend to fill party spots often.
