Can anyone explain to me what just happened - I am lying dead in the Bastok mines as I write this.. decided to wait as there are quite a few people in here.. one guy who looks like a white mage, Leck, stopped by my body without doing anything.. then about a minute later it said "Leck mourns the passing of Darwock" and he ran off. Is he winding me up?

he just used an emote command.
If you type /emote <any text> it will give a command line saying your character completed a specific action.
e.g. if I wrote:
/emote sits there wondering what is going on!
It will print in the command line (which anyone in the vacinity can see ):
Rarehero sits there wondering what is going on!
Nothing sinister in what happened and a lot people who see dead bodies (but are unable to do anything, remember a WHM can only raise at lvl25+) will often do something similar as a sign of respect for their fallen fellow adventure.
There are also many pre-built emote commands in game that will give preset descriptions (and in many cases animations).
e.g type /kneel and you will get:
Darwock kneels respectfullyComment

Garuda Battle:
Twice in the battle i was on 1 hp, 3 hi-options i used to keep my health up. I got garuda down to about 33% hp, but I couldnt astal flow due to my hp being very low
But instead 10 seconds later, I get the message : Time Limit Reached... Most expensive message i have recived.

Slightly MEH! Weekend. Gained a couple of levels but soon had to go back to the farming grind in order to buy the Utsusemi: Ni scroll. Not far to go now thankfully.
However, I was watching Ces play last night and think I witnessed a genuine in game miracle and thought I?d share ^^
Backstory. Yesterday Ces was farming in King Ranperre?s Tomb and decided to camp the Crypt Ghost. However it spawned whilst he was in the middle of healing and pulled at half HPMP so someone else didn?t get it.
He died.
Not only that, but he levelled down to 29. ><
And all his gear was lvl30 >< >< >< ><
With less than 100exp he thought he could maybe solo nuke some easy prey stuff and get the EXP back.
He died again >< >< >< >< >< ><
So he was 600exp away from levelling with no equip, and no cash. I think he was ready to quit.
Luckily I managed to speak with Vanicent offline who agreed to send Ces his 21 armour. Hopefully with that he would be able to go to Kazham and gain the EXP for level 30. So he gets a PT invite in Yhoator Jungle and it seems the Goblin Smithys are tetchy. Battles keep getting disrupted with their intervention (I have a feeling high levels were training them) but he manages to gain a bit of EXP.
Then it happens.
Whilst the PT is busy on a Mandragora he gets aggroed by a Goblin. Perhaps he could have cast Bind or Gravity on it to buy some time but in moments like these, you tend to panic, and he made for the zone. The gob took swipes at him for 60hp each time but he made it to the tunnel, almost at the zone, and the gob hits him again. He?s down to 12HP and another hit is bound to finish him (and put him back where he started), even if he made it to the zone, mobs tend to get another hit so we both assumed he was done for.
Before he makes the zonepoint:
?The Goblin Smithy hits Cesarion for 60HP?
Cesarion keeps on running :O :O :O :O
WTF just happened, we glance down at his HP and he?s recovered and makes it to the zone.
The PT had finished the Mandragora fight just in time and the EXP he received had been enough for him to level up to 30.
Absolutely unbelievable. Frankly we couldn?t believe his luck and I?m starting to think that maybe Altana was watching down on him after all ^^
So thanks to Vanicent for being willing to hand over his armour for a couple of hours (much appreciated dude).Comment

The same kind of thing happened to me, fighting a Rock Lizard (yeah yeah, I know...). I did a call for help but was too late (well, that and nobody ever helps around Bastok way!). The Lizard was just about dead, and so was I, we hit each other simulataneously and I thought I was done for, but my hit had taken me to level 6 and replenished my energy. Phew.
Can I ask another newbie question, what's the 2hr job ability? I read one of those starter guides and it said this should be kept for emergencies, and somebody I met in the game told me something similar, but I've no idea what it is.Comment

Go to your abilities menu and your 2-hour ability will be listed.
Basically every job has a move available from the start that when used takes 2 hours (real time) to recharge before it can be used again. This long recharge time means you can't develop strategies of play where you depend on it. However, if you find yourself in a tight spot using it can be the difference between life and death.
Each job's 2 hour move is different. For WAR for example, it's Mighty Strikes, where every blow the warrior dishes out deals critical damage, or NIN is Mijin Gakure where the Ninja commits suicide and deals massive damage to the enemy (dying in this way does not lead to EXP loss).
I haven't played as BLM for ages but think the 2 hour was called manafont. Whilst it is activated you can cast spells even if you have no MP.Comment

a friend said that if you can use 3 searing lights on garuda then its should be over. and make sure not to fight it on windsday(dunno cuz it maybe stronger cuz its wind based), and on darksday cuz carbuncle is weak during this time.

Logged on this morning and and the Martial Slacks I got yesterday had sold taking me way above the 40k I need for the Scroll of Utsusemi: Ni.
Bought that and had a bit of cash left over so hopefully if more stuff sells during the day I should be able to obtain some more Shihei stacks and get back to the levelling grind tonight.
Level 40 is in my sights ^^Comment

Yeah garuda is strongest on windsday and weakend on iceday. Carbuncle is stongest on lightday (whm day ^^) and weakened on darksday.Originally posted by aegen
The problem with 3x searing light is when u activate "Astral Flow" it starts a timer of 3 minutes. And each blood pact takes 1 min to recharge. To pull off 3 searing lights would mean u would have to do it a split second after using astral flow which is very hard, espeically when in battle and fighting an avatar. Cause when u use astal flow the avatar will automacitally attack u due to the hate given.
Im gonna give garuda one last go tonight, cause she was basically dead last time, i was 2 secs to the final searing light which would put him into -50hp, but somehow he pulled out an aero ii on carbuncle killing it and i died, unable to resummon him. I was very pissed off, cause I all ready for the final move, 2 second would have changed everything. If I fail tonight i'm giving up on this quest. Wasted 70k+ already, not worth it anymore.

New expansion finally confirmed, it has been rumoured ever since they copyrighted the name.
Square Enix announced they will release the expansion disc Final Fantasy XI: Chain of Promathia for PS2 in Japan this autumn.
