Anyone else read this? I picked up Issue 3 a few days ago, but Issue 4 has just come out.

For those that don't know, it does exactly what it says on the tin, and is exclusively dedicated to retro consoles/computers and their games. It features a coverdisc full of classic ROMs each month and the emulators you will need to play them with.

The content on the issue 3 disc was all about Gremlin Graphics (where are they now?), so all your favourites like Monty, Trailblazer, Lotus Turbo Challenge etc are all on there

There's nothing to stop you from just downloading these games and emus from the internet of course, but the mag is also a fine read with some good features, and goes some way to justify the ?5.99 price.

I just wish I had discovered it sooner because Issue1 (now sold out) sells for ?25+ on ebay!

I saw it yesterday and was briefly tempted to pick it up just for the disc alone. As for the magazine... It wasn't too bad, although did come across as a fairly flimsy read.

It's a pity due to the legal complications of emulation that a lot of the big 'retro' computer games can't necessarily be put on. I almost got the sense from browsing that it was having to side-step around this issue by avoiding the bigger, and more immediately obvious titles.

This could be classed perhaps as a blessing in disguise though, because at least then some of the hidden gems that weren't very well remembered can get a chance to shine on any future discs authorised to house them.

You have certain softcos to blame for that. Codemasters and Ultimate: Play the Game are just two who won't allow their games to be distributed legally.

I never knew the 2nd issue had come-out. No advertising will make-sure this mag doesn`t last. I thought the 1st issue was ok but far too expensive and the disc was a pile of pap.

If it was ?3, I would buy every issue.

It's much better now than it was when it started. Mainly because they have contributors and proper freelancers writing for them now. Even me. Fingers crossed there'll be an article by myself in issue #5...

It's a fantastic magazine and one i've been waiting for for a very long time, i have all four issues so far and now it's going monthly i couldn't be happier.
It's a bit pricey at ?6 but it's getting better every issue, the forum is pretty good to.
I did make a thread about this magazine a few months ago with little interest from the forum and as for it not lasting because of no advertising, you must be joking, the retro scene is getting bigger and bigger and i expect other retro magazines to start appearing now publishers realise a market is inplace to buy them.
I love everything about retro gamer magazine and long may it continue, anybody who has got issue one hang on to it as it's fetching ?40+ on ebay already.

Its good to hear that its got better. I will definitely be getting issues 2-3-4 now and I hope it lasts.

Issue1 is worth ?40, I will deinitely be holding onto mine, it could be worth fortune oneday.

I'm feeling in a kind of mood to play some vintage software so I may pick this up (finally), even though I'm uncomfortable with 'videogame retro' as a concept. Does anyone else think that the idea of certain parts of gaming being 'retro' puts a time stamp on everything which shouldn't necessarily be there?

Even now, there are people aleady ridiculously labelling the Dreamcast as 'retro', and I'm a little tired of this future obsessed attitude which dominates so much of the scene right now.

For example, I don't read 'retro' books or watch 'retro' films.

Maybe it's because gaming as a whole is related to the technology which encases it at the time of conception... Maybe that's why perhaps more than any other media, this form is considered a product of its time. However, when I boot up my SNES or C64, I still don't generally like the idea that I'm automatically doing so for the sake of nostalgia, which is way of thinking that often seems to be a given in relation to the idea of 'retro'.
