    Personal Fave Megadrive Games

If I had to pick one console above all others, it would be the Megadrive. It was my first console 'love' - I grew up with the machine and I doubt any other console will come close to it. There are a few MD games that I simply could not do without, and here are some of them. I'm aware that these aren't the best games for the system, but they're ones I love.

    Golden Axe/Golden Axe 2

I've bunched these two together as they're pretty much the same game. Golden Axe was the first MD title I ever played - even today it's still as fun as ever. The fantasy setting was perfect - I really wish Sega would do an update. Golden Axe 2 isn't quite as good, but the visuals are better and the music is brilliant (esp the first level background track).

    Shadow Dancer

I've never understood why people are so down on Shadow Dancer. I suppose many thought it would be the true follow up to Revenge of Shinobi, but I personally find this game more playable and fun. The graphics are bold and colourful - still some of the best on the machine, IMO, the music is catchy and sticks in the mind and the gameplay is fast and interesting.

    Axis: Final Zone Senki

Everyone should have a Wolf Team game in their all-time faves list. This mech-based isometric shooter is a little samey in places, but any game that comes with a set of postcards gets my vote. I still have the postcards, but I foolishly got rid of the Japanese version years ago and now have to content myself with the US version (and the standard awful box artwork). If anyone has a copy of the Jap version they want to get rid of, get in touch.

Alex Kidd and the Enchanted Castle

An odd choice I know, but I've always loved Alex Kidd. The MD version isn't exactly pushing the machine - in fact I think this probably could have been done on the Master System with very little effort - but it simply drips charm. They do not make games like this anymore. I suppose the GTA-generation wouldn't get excited about a monkey-boy in a red and yellow jumpsuit playing paper-scissors-stone with funny looking badguys. Ho hum.

    Alien Storm

Again, another title that is rather unfairly looked down on by Sega fans. I was a massive fan of the arcade machine, and I bought the Japanese MD version the week it came out. Sure it was far too easy, but then so was Golden Axe. Nothing will beat playing as a robot who uses it's leg as a gun and has a special attack that simply involves blowing itself up. Again, an update would be very welcome.

    Herzog Zwei

The first RTS game - beating Dune II by a few years. I got this game free with my MD (the store owner chucked it in because it didn't sell very well). Ironically I played this game the most. It's so addictive in two player it's almost criminal.

    ESWAT

Another day one purchase for me, this game is often ignored by Sega fans. It's pretty simple in places, but it's good straight forward fun. The 'robocop' idea is one that could easily be updated today...listening, Sega?

I'll post more up later, but in the meantime, why not post up your favourite MD games? It would be nice to unearth some forgotten gems.

I never owned an MD - although I almost bought one recently. I did used to play the MD at my friends house all the time though.

I think the game we played the most was World Cup '90. I actually bought this recently and tried it out on someones MD but it seems to have agedd terribly. Still it was my favourite at the time.

I've got World Cup 90 and it's pretty stinky. Each to their own, I suppose

          Thought of some more:

          Wardner Special

Great little platformer, was given a glowing review in Mean Machines when it was released. Doesn't look like much but it's a brilliant little game, and one of those obscure gems that rewards the effort taken to seek it out.

          Jewel Master

A strange one this - the game is terrible, I'll admit that. But for some reason, I still like it. I've no idea why! Kinda like Castlevania but no where near as good. Don't go buying it on my recommendation.

          Atomic Robokid

Featuring everyone's favourite dustbin with lasers, I prefer this to the PC Engine version. Pretty basic but very fun.

          Langrisser/Warsong

Long-running and very popular Japanese RPG series, the western release (Warsong) sank without a trace. I was obsessed with this game for months - the gameplay is perfection. Great character design and music don't do it any harm, either. Well worth seeking out.

          Aero Blasters

Another game I played in the arcade first - at a pub where my parents used to eat alot. The MD version is pretty much arcade perfect. Not the best shooter on the machine, but decent regardless.

          Magical Flying Hat Turbo Adventure

Released in the west with different sprites as Decapattack, this is basically an update of the Master System classic Psycho Fox. Common as muck and very easy to find on ebay, this remains one of my fave MD platformers.

          Ringside Angel

Another 'so bad it's good' title. Featuring female wrestlers, this oddball title could be completed by using just one move, had awful animation and poor sound (apart from the strange 'squidge' noise when performing submission moves - that was ace!) but I still love it. It even came with one of those strange hologram covers! Top stuff.

Last Battle/Fist of the North Star

I suppose this is getting silly now, but here's another terrible title that I really like. Painfully basic gameplay is coupled with passable visuals and some decent music. God knows why Sega updated this for the Sega Ages range when there are other, better titles to pick - my advice would be to pick up the MD version for a couple of quid.

          Wonderboy in Monster World

The final Wonderboy game to be released in the west, this is a real forgotten gem. Hardly anyone talks about it, but it is IMO the finest Wonderboy game. Very simple RPG action but it will keep you busy for a while. There was also a PC Engine CD version (Legend of the Dynastic Hero) with slightly altered sprites and some beautiful, beautiful music. Needless to say, I own both.

Strider is another game I forgot to include! It blew me away too, even if it was a little buggy and suffered from too much sprite flicker. Ghouls 'n' Ghosts is another Capcom conversion by Sega that does the MD proud.

I was also brought up by the Sega suckling bottle. First up was the Master System then in 1988 I was give a Mega Drive. While I loved the SFC I must admit that the Mega Drive was my first true loved games system. games that bring back fond memories are:

              Super Shinobi 1 & 2
              Bare Knuckle 1 & 2
              Super Monaco GP
              Twinkle Tail
              Elemental Master
Thunder Force II MD, III and IV
              Devil Crash
              Batman (Sunsoft game)
              Valis III
              Aero Blasters
              Sonic 1 & 2
              Golden Axe
Marvel Land (Talsmin Adventure in the UK)
              Midnight Resistance
              Mercs
              Ghouls 'n Ghosts
              Granada
              Axis FZ (Final Zone)
              Magical Hat Flying Turbo Adventure

and so many more. I thank Sega for getting me in to gaming.

                Mine were:

                Streets of Rage 1+2
Warsong (top, top game, how many times do I have to say it! Why hasn't there been a GBA edition? Much needed I think)
Landstalker (another one needing a good seeing to by the GBA)
                Sonic 2
                Mercs
Strider (was in my early teens when this came out in Britain, paid for it via a bloody catalogue, came to 70 quid+!)
Alien Storm (mentioned this not long ago, loved the change of gameplay with the gunsight shooting stages)
                Desert Storm
                Toe Jam & Earl

Sure theres loads more, just can't think.

Glad to see someone else likes Warsong.

I doubt we'll see another decent version of the game, the original Langrisser team has moved on to other projects - the Growlancer series, namely.

                    Thought of some more:

                    Dynamite Duke

Another (very close) arcade conversion, I remember being quite excited when I heard a MD version was about to be released. A decent Operation Wolf clone, the difference here is that you can see your character on screen (like Crossed Swords on the NeoGeo). You can both fire and throw punches, which keeps it nice and fresh. A little easy (like most early MD games) but still a decent enough title.

                    Whip Rush

Another side scrolling shooter, when it was released it was rather harshly rated by the press at the time. It's not the best shooter on the console but it isn't the worst, and features some nice visuals and decent music.

Mickey Mouse and the Castle of Illusion

A fairly obvious one this, but it deserves a mention. This title simply blew me away when I first played it. It was by far and away the best looking game I'd ever seen at this point, and the gameplay (which took a leaf out of Mario's book) was second to none. It hasn't aged as well as some games, but it's still as playable as ever. Well worth picking up in the Saturn double pack, along with fellow Disney MD title Quackshot.

Mickey Mouse and the Castle of Illusion, yeah I have some fond memories of that. The game did look the balls at the time, felt like a Disney cartoon for sure. I can only remember 2 levels out of the game though, the 1st in the woods and an Alice in Wonderland type one? Lots of cards anyway. Think I was playing theis game around Christmas time, so yeah, I recall a magical quality to it.

The levels were fantastic - there was the woods one you mentioned (which turns from a happy place to a nightmareish place halfway through the level - brilliant). Other levels were Aztec, Toyland, Minature land (complete with teacups, books and even a cake-based level!) and of course the Castle of Illusion itself.

I distinctly remember renting General Chaos about 10 times along with Pete Sampras tennis when they were first released, however i bought general Chaos not long ago to find it had lost a lot of it's charm!! But i think Ghouls and Ghosts has to be the best, i remember it taking me all day to complete, however i seem to remember the last boss being relatively easy compared to the rest of the game!!

John Madden. ade my jaw drop the 1st time I played this, and really helped my get in to American Football.

                              Other fav's are.

Tiger Heli. It's by no means the best looking or sounding port, but my god does it have the best AI found in any shooter. It's likes you're playing against people on the internet or somthing.

Thunder Force 4. The showcase MD game, it still looks class today.

Wonder Boy IV (JP). The best in series, and just looks so good.

Revenge of Shinobi. Hand down the best Ninja game ever made.

Streets Of Rage II. A classic in every sence of the world. Worth getting for themusic alone.

Star Flight. Mega underrated and over looked game.

Land Stalker. In my view this is better than Zelda III

Micky Mouse/Donland Duck series. Classic games that really pushed the MD.

Gyoung. 1 of the best shooters ever made.

Ghoust N Ghouls (playes better than the Arcade)

                              J. League Offical TV game ( 1 of the best football games ever)

                              Sub Terrania

Red Zone (how can the MD handle this ?)

Brian Lara 96 (hands down the best Cricket game ever made)

                              Dynamite Headdy (AWESOME)

                              Gunstar Heroes (F-ing Awesome)

                              Comix Zone

Battle Squadron. Bloody great shooyter, which nobody ever talks abaout.

Contra Hard Crops. In many ways better, than the Snes version

Elemental Master (if only for thatlast music track)

PGA Golf III.Hands down the best golf game

NHL/EA Hockey No NHL game as ever come close to this gem.

Street Fighter II (that amaizing 6 button pad made all the diff)

                              Desert Strike

                              Road Rash

Devil Crash (thik it's better than the PC-Eng version)

God there's so many more, need time to think
