Yes but it came in by EMS from Japan and in the UK was handled by Parcelforce.

If it had gone to customs it would have been recorded as an event on the tracking. I'm, 100% certain that there is no fee coming my way. Parcelforce don't work that way, they won't release a parcel unless the charges owed are cleared first.

Cost me £5, £5 and £15 respectively. That might seem like a bargain but the seller wouldn't give a multiple discount on airmail so I figured f*ck it, might as well pay a couple of quid extra for EMS delivery (he was willing to discount this) and get the stuff sooner rather than later. My bad. Parcelforce kindly stung me with £6 VAT - not sure how 15% of £25 works out to be £6 but there you go - and, this is the killer, £13.50 charge for collecting the VAT!! So in the end I paid £35 in total for delivery and VAT on £25 worth of goods

VAT is charged on the value of the postage as well as the goods. Makes no sense at all, but that's VAT for you ..

The couriers should not deliver without collecting the VAT first as they are not giving you an option to refuse and return the parcel to the sender. If they deliver without collecting the VAT it's their mistake so they should be liable for paying it. If you want to stay on the safe side you could pay just the VAT but I wouldn't pay any applied charges. I did this a couple of years ago when Citylink delivered a camera lens from Japan and then asked for VAT -- I refused to pay it and there were no repurcussions.

Just had the dreaded customs notice myself today, £31 on an £100 (+£20 shipping) package. Their rates are all over the place it would seem. To be fair, it's the first one i've had in absolutely years, so can't complain.

I haven't been stung by customs in ages, although I do make a point of not making large orders in one go where possible (I figure that if I can keep the potential package size and weight down, I'm more likely to avoid any charges).
