Wonder kitchen (JPN SFC), appreciation thread.

LOL, somehow i don't think im going to get hundreds of replys with this one as i doubt the only a handful of people on here will know what this is. But it's so fun & quirky that its my mission to convert you all Muwahahahahaha.

Well as far as weird games go this one is up there near the top, officially the only cooking game available for the super famicom. A sadly neglected genre that needs more games IMO. The reason this game is so obscure & hard to find is the fact that it was never intended for sale, instead it was given out free in a campaign run by the japanese food company Ajinomoto. If you collected the labels off their mayonnaise bottles & sent them in you were sent a free super famicom game. How cool is that?

Anyway the game revolves around our hero Motoko who has to cook various dishes by finding the missing ingredients while ajinomoto plugs as many of their products as they can hehe, The game consists of a point & click style adventure where clicking on nearly everything will do somthing.

So the game starts out here in the kitchen, Hidden around the kitchen are 4 animals. They all have ingredient lists that they want you to complete. Once you find one you will be whisked off to a new area.

Here we are in the snow white rip off cottage. Clicking on everything will eventually reveal all the hidden items you need on the ingredient list. For example i found a onion in the picture frame WTF

Once you have completed your list you then have to endure a long cutscene where ajinomoto bestows the virtues of their mayonnaise over other brands available. However you do learn somthing, as it explains the origins of mayonnaise. Its interesting, no really it is wahahaha

Now this is where the fun really starts, hurrah its cooking time (^_^)

The kitchen takes a top down approach, the cooker & oven is on the left. The sink & cooking utensils are on the right. And at the back of the wall is salt & pepper, mayonnaise (Ajinomoto's naturally hehe) oil, & finally milk.

Today i will be making a spanish omlette.....

    First chop all your ingredients.

Then take your pan & fill it with water & put it on the cooker to boil, add you sliced potato. Then strain the water off the potato into the sink.

Now take your frying pan & transfer the boiled potatoe, the onion, tomato & green pepper & fry for a minuite, dont forget a bit of salt & pepper.

Transfer all the cooked ingredients to the plate using the chopsticks.

Now to make the omlette mix, crack the egg into the bowl, add the milk & some salt & pepper then mix with the chopsticks.

Pour the mixture into the frying pan then add all your cooked ingredients.

Now just slide it onto the plate, then grab for the mayonnaise (bet you were wondering when it would come into things)

Now to garnish, hmm a squirt here, hmm a bit there. Tadaaaa im done VOILLA Spanish omlette.

Now you have done 1 dish the game shows you a quick recipe for a sauce made using mayonnaise, for example motoko here is telling you how to make almond sauce.

Now theres 3 more recipes to find, some of them use mayonnaise in the weirdest combinations. Mayonnaise fruit salad anyone??? WTF eww The games pretty short, but to be fair it is a freebie. Graphics & sound are ok enough, looks very pre school but ignore that it's still loads of fun in a weird way.

If your interested in giving it a try, you may as well search out the rom as coming across a real copy will be pretty hard.

I played this years ago on a mates SFC, he had a pile of discs which contained obscure Japanese games. Back then I couldn't figure-out what to do, and it really isn't my type of game, but your shots and description make it look quite appealing. I will have a look for the rom now, and have another go!

    Mayonaise Fruit Salad, yummie!!

I played through this a couple of years ago. A very bizarre gaming experience while it lasts

What originally raised my interest was seeing a copy on eBay UK back then, but I missed out on buying it. What's the going rate for one of these? I think that one went for about ?20-25.

Seeing those screen shots brings back memories of my late teens wasting my time away with countles odd japanese SFC games. I loved the Ajinamoto logo speach. It's identical to the real thing.

For those of you sad enough, you can watch some of the Japanese Ajinamoto TV Adds on their site http://www.ajinomoto.co.jp/cm/index....oductTop=cmTop

It`s not that hard to find in Japan (obviously...), you can pick up a copy from decent Retro stores for about 35 quid.

I remember Importaku telling me that it hardly ever shows up on Yahoo Auctions and when it does it cost a small fortune. I saw it once and was going to pick it up for him but I was too slow and by the time I got back to the shop it had gone
