This series has faded a little over the last few years, what with the dire Dreamcast version and the fact that most of the development team jumped ship to create the 'Growlancer' series, but back in the day this was the premier turned-based RPG IMO.
The first game (released in the US as Warsong) remains one of my favourite MD games. I played it to death. I love everything about the game, the dumpy visuals, the excellent character designs, the character level ups and the amazing music. I never got round to playing the second MD game (or the SNES 'Der Langrisser') but I did recently buy the PC Engine CD-ROM remake of the first game, which is pretty much the same with improved music and the odd cutscene.
The only other versions I've played are Langrisser III on the Saturn (which retains the amazing artwork but has a different battle system), Langrisser Dramatic Edition (reworked versions of the original two games, not as good IMO) and Langrisser IV & V on the PSX (both excellent versions). However the first game remains the best in my book. As the sole version of Langrisser in English, I recommend it to all.
