    Hi,
Im off to Japan in the not too distant future, Tokyo to be precise, Wondered what stores i should look out for?? Im after some Megadrive, Saturn & PCEngine bits n bobs mainly??
Ive heard of Big Tiger but thats about it...and the Japanese featurette in Retro Gamer only featured Osaka.

Just get yourself onto Akihabara (Sp?). I know some of the more leet forumites will tell you it's a tourist trap but it's really not if you keep your head. There are loads and loads of shops and almost all of them sell retro, just don't buy the first thing you see as your bound to see it cheaper later on or find something even rarer.

When you get back, be sure top post some photos of your booty.

    That sounds sick doesn't it?

There are two excellent ones in Akihabara.

MediaLand - can't miss it. Come out of the train station and head for the main road. Turn right and there you go, MediaLand. The retro stuff is on the upper floors. Lots of it and often in mint condition, but very high prices.

Trader 2 - Cross the road and walk along the back road on the left of Club SEGA. You should have the railway bridge on your left. Walk a little further and you'll see the green and white sign of Trader 2. Similar type of range to MediaLand, but cheaper and less mint. Last time I was there they had a load of Game and Watches for enormous prices, but very tempting.

I found some awesome retro stuff at Superpotato in Aki. (Turn left at the big SEGA arcade and first right and listen for the music.

If you are retro stuff just get to Aki and wander around, most of the bigger stores have some retro stuff, plus there are a few gems down the back streets.

Here are a few store fronts to look for.

When will you be in Tokyo, I can save you a lot of time and help you out with your retro shopping if you want. As said here, Super Potato, Trader 2 are best with Media Land being okay imo, little bit overpriced and not what they used to be. There is also a shop little people know about, it's called Furensu, without guidance you will never find it though...

What is ****ing expensive? Someone who was brought up with the true value of the Pound i.e. English Grey Importers with nothing to offer for a cost. What is ****ing expensive? Shops in this country where I live that offer goods for less than original RRP years later for those that couldn't be ****ing bothered on release for mint original condition. What is ****ing expensive? This country is loved for it's convenience over all else. What is ****ing expensive? Tell me please. ****ing annoying attitude.

                  Ooh er....

I'm sorry about my lack of English ability, so i will retort in a form of writing which is hopefully acceptable to you sir!

What I actually itended to suggest was that in Eastern Japans current competetive gaming market, the proprietor Super Potato is in fact a exorbitant option, which while offering a variety of quality goods is not as cost effective in comparison to rival companies in the area such as Trader and Softmap.

Liberty on the main street of Akihabara has quite a lot of cool Retro stuff but their prices are way over the top. To be honest you're best off looking in the back street shops for cheaper Retro goodies. Last time I visited Tokyo was September 2003. Had a great time but did find the prices a bit expensive for some stuff since they know that there are going to be thousands of hungry gamers visiting there from all over the world. I belive Osaka is much cheaper. Still, most of the best stuff can be found in Tokyo's Akihabara. Just make sure to look around before you buy because prices vairy an awful lot.

Well the whole romantic idea of the small shops just doesn't cut it anymore.
There are some retro shops worth visiting, and they are Trader 1 en 2, Super Potato, Furansu AND Akiba Place, 5th floor they have good Saturn and Super Famicom stock, good prices, bought 4 SF games today
