Nah, I used to have a PS1 wheel and it was great fun for TOCA, RR4 and GT2 but there's no way I'm buying another one just for Touring Cars (I still really like the 1st game in the series). Actually I don't have the space with a Driving Force Pro on the way.

Motor Toon GP2, Wipeout 2097 and RR are the games I'd like to try the neGcon with.

For ?3 odd, it's prolly worth it as an experiment, but seriously - as a controller it's seriously flawed...

You probably wouldn't, but the NegCon is the only analogue controller supported by 2097, and all the fastest players swear by them as vital for decent times at Phantom.

The analogue buttons on the Negcon are excellent, they're about 3 feet tall.

I've still got a R@RE limited edition black Negcon knocking about here, don't think it's worth trying to sell it on ebay as no one will be searching for them these days.

Same applies to Rage Racer. While analogue isn't necessary or particularly helpful in the first two games, it's absolutely required in the third - you need to be able to hold the contours of certain turns on the courses of that one if you're going to have a hope in hell of getting near to the best times, and getting through the Extreme Oval unscathed using digital control is more a matter of luck than judgement. I bought mine (from the same guy as is selling those on eBay now) just for that game, and it paid off in time trials almost immediately.

Fast lap times or no, I still thought it was horrible to use

I'm not arguing with that The biggest problem with it is that it's nearly impossible to set it to a sensitivity which feels natural. Most games seem to offer four different settings, with the default (30 degrees twist=maximum response) being far too twitchy. 45 degrees is about the best available, bit it's still bloody difficult to figure out exactly how much twist certain curves require.

Ridge V allows you to calibrate it however you want, setting the maximum response to any point within the available range. A far more elegant solution, and something that the earlier titles really should have included.

The other problem's with the analogue buttons, with it being far too awkward to switch from pressing one of them down to pressing both at the same time, as and when the game requires it (grip cornering being the main one). Much easier is leaving the acceleration on one of the two red analogues, while moving the brake onto the left shoulder (also analogue).

Again, it never feels entirely natural, but it's not as bad a controller as it first appears - it's just that the default settings in the games that use it are terrible.

I just picked up a minty seemingly new black negcon from super potato for the shockingly high price of Y189 (ie. 95p)

Now I just need to find some game to use it on.

I highly recommend any of the first 3 WipeOut games!
