    Moments in gaming history

Ok - boring, somewhat derivative thread - but hey - it is Tuesday.

    Answers please:

    1) The most stunning moment in games history. An instance when you are playing a game, and something stuns you that much so as to stay with you forever.

    2) The biggest let down in gaming history. A particular title or even a part of a game that disappointed or upset you the most.

    3) Your "LOL" (shudder - hate that abbrieviation) moment - something that filled you with utter joy whilst playing a game.

    4) The classiest game you have ever owned - might be that the box is waaay cool, or that the game itself is so swanky you just want to show it off to your mates.

    5) The arcade machine that devoured the most pocket money as a kid. Might have been on holiday, or in a local takeaway, or whatever. Let us know.

      1. Gunstar Heroes..the whole game. From the moment the md was turned on my mate and I were WTF OMG OOMMFFGG..but especially the Dice Palace level. One of those instances where design and execution are truly mind blowing.

      2. Streets of Rage 3...traded in SoR 2 and other stuff for it...took it back a day later but SoR 2 was gone

      3. My first 3 hit combo on sf2..the classic deep jumping punch into standing punch into dragon punch..it just felt so right.

      4. Tough one..I like most of my games for various reasons tbh..always liked sapphire for that oh so sexy art work mind. Or the PD LE (JP N64)...worth a wank that box design is...or taromaru...that game is like a beautiful woman.

      5. Double Dragon..at my local pool...and my folks wondered why I liked swimming so much!

        1) Radiant Silvergun - the 3rd boss where you can hide behind the pillars and **** to avoid it's massive laser blasts. That was the moment where the game just clicked for me. Was cool to see Treasure resurrect the idea for the Stage 3 (Spider) boss in Gradius V.

        2) Sega Rally 2 - I know it has it's fans, but the handling was just awful compared to the sublime handling & controls of the Saturn version. Daytona CCE was pish as well.

        3) Any game with Yoshi in it!

        4) Biohazard 4, couldn't wait to show that one off, but if we're talking strictly retro, then probably MGS.

        5) Out-Run without a doubt.

1 - Mario 64. The future has arrived I thought, funny thing is it's *still* the best 3D platformer.

2 - Jet Set Radio Future. The original was so utterly wonderful, and yet the sequel so directionless and boring. The brilliance was still in there somewhere, but too hard to find.

3 - Made in Wario on GBA. Pure mischief on a cartridge.

4- Soul Calibur 1 on the DC. Brought my DC into the office many times with the VGA box and blew everyone away.

          5 - OutRun or GoldenAxe!

            1. Shenmue. The graphics were mind blowing when it came out, and I love playing it!

            2. Final Fantasy X. After the MAGIC that i consider FFIX to be, how did this come out? A playable game, but not something i'm wowed by in the slightest.

3.FF7 where Cloud dressed up like " a laaayyydeee" I couldn't stop laughing!

            4. Sonic Adventure 2 DC - R@RE Birthday Edition. R@RE or not, I still think it's the coolest thing I own, the music CD, the incomplete list of Sonic games, the fact that the game is in English and totally playable, I love it hehe.

            5. Virtua Fighter 3! I remember when this came out, I must've spent a tenner when I played it in London Trocadero that day. I also remember when they said it would be ported to Saturn haha.

              1) Capcom vs SNK on the NGPC. I expected nothing from this. In return it gave me the best experience I've had with a game.

              2) Rez... i've really tried but I just don't get it.

              3) Space Channel 5 Part 2. After what I thought was a pretty crappy first 2 levels it suddenly opened up. The music, the vibrant colours, the Ulala-ness of it. My first import game and easily my favourite.

              4) Cosmic Smash... the box!!

              5) I can't remember the name but I was a Namco racing game which took a picture of your face. Would make monthly trips to meadowhall just play that!

                1. That bit in LTTP where you stand on that portal and turn into a rabbit.

                2. The last boss in Super Shinobi, far too easy, wank graphics on him compared to every other boss in the game and a crap ending to a fantastic game.

                3. Not retro though. A goal on Pro Evo 4 where I flicked the ball over another players head, then turned and smashed it past the keeper. Football games have come a long way.

                4. No idea, although I did like my MASSIVE Super Metroid box.

                5. Shinobi, Strider, Golden Axe or Street Fighter 2.

                  1) Link leaving his house for the first time in ALTTP, the rain, the thunder, the music... I fell in love

                  2) Mario 64. Didn't like it then, don't like it now. Love 2d platformers, 3d ones stink!

                  3) The ending on FFIX... I was so involved in that game, the ending really did bring about a **** eating grin!

                  4) Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger on the snes. I love those chunky cardboard boxes!

                  5) Double Dragon, without a doubt. Hours lost on summer trips to Rhyl and Prestatyn!

                    1) The most stunning moment in games history:
Seeing Sonic on Dreamcast for the first time.

                    2) The biggest let down in gaming history.
Driver 3 and Halo 2. Both still good games espically the latter, but both were so hyped beyond belief and I belived it would offer everything. They couldent.

                    3) Your "LOL" moment - something that filled you with utter joy whilst playing a game.
A tie between Jet Set Radio and Outrun 2.

                    4) The classiest game you have ever owned.
                    Metal Gear Solid 3.
                    5) The arcade machine that devoured the most pocket money as a kid.
                    Time crisis and SEGA Rally.

My answers will probally change every month but that's for now

                      3) WArio Ware

                      4) 3rd Strike or Jet Set Radio

5)As a kid? Maybe the Simpsons arcade game.

1)The deep underwater section of Torvus Bog on Prime 2, when the remixed Brinstar music kicks in from Super Metroid. It's not retro but that means little for such a personal moment.

                        (original midi)

                        2) Capcom Fighting Jam(rag)

                        3) My mate scoring the leetest double kill in history with one bullet from a DY-357 LX on the car park roof from miles away on me and my other mate as we were circle-strafing around the boxes at the bottom door. Nothing will ever be as 1337 as that, ever, by anyone, ever.

                        4) Real Bout Fatal Fury on the Neo geo AES. The artwork for that game is the best ever, and eventhough it isn't worth a lot I pimp it around like it is, as it is to me personally. I even brought it to the last meet just to sit there on Marcus' front room window ledge looking hard as **** with Geese sat in his chair with his leg crossed looking like he's just hit 4 lines of charlie. Hard as **** art. Even Shinkiro himself would struggle to match such class as this 10 years on. No ****ing around.

                        5) SFII:CE

Had better reply myself seeing as I started the thread!

                          1) Final Fantasy VII. Still without doubt the game that had the biggest impact on me. The graphics are spot on, the music is even better, the story is phenomenal, and in Sephiroph you have the pixellated embodiment of pure evil.

                          2) Takara's Neo conversions for 16 bit consoles. I was only a lad, couldn't afford a Neo, so being able to buy Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown and Art Of Fighting was a godsend - unfortunately, with the exception of the (IMO) excellent-at-the-time conversion of Fatal Fury Special for the SFC/SNES, they were all rubbish.

                          3) Yoshi's Island on the SNES - and it still does. If I am feeling a bit hung over or fed up or in need of a chuckle, walking into a Fuzzy and getting the farting noise/LSD style mind**** still perks me up. A beautiful, funny, charming game that is still probably the finest platformer I have ever played.

                          4) Now I own them, probably Ikaruga, R-Type Final or Gradius V. My mates had not heard of these, and have been suitably stunned when they saw them. Stunning shooters are a dying breed, and only real gaming fans like us guys on here seem to appreciate them anymore. It is refreshing to turn folks on to cracking games like these when all people seem to be into these days is either FPS or footy manager 2005.

                          5) there was a campsite in France my folks used to have a caravan on - they had a games room, and I spent my time divided between fishing, playing football against various other european nationalities, and ploughing the francs into the machines. The ones I remember most would be Captain Commando, Knights of The Round, Ghosts & Goblins, Wonderboy and Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. The Jacko game is pretty good - better than the MD version - may look it up on MAME! Good music, too.

                            1. Tough very tough question Ridge Racer Arcade: The 3D buzz was in the air all over London arcades in the early to mid 90's and when I visited the Trocadero in 1994 this game had me hypnotised. It wasn't just the stunning smooth 3D, but the style; this game shouted ' I am a Japanese God; worship me and my tecnicolour heaven '. Suffice to say I love this game more than any other; it's world makes me happy and that's why I love it!

                            2. Need for Speed 2 and then all the subsequent sequels NFS1 on the 3DO was brilliant, a game that truly had me gripped and in awe. The fact that people still talk about it today with legendary adulation proves my point. The sequels were stripped of all realism and became half-baked lightweight turkeys.

                            3. Once again it has to be Ridge Racer. The moment when you enter the first bend, powerslide and the commentator praises your skill

                            4. It has to be Crash&Burn 3DO; this game came with my U.S machine and just blew me away. The 3D and the sound were staggering; it played like a dream too. All my mates were stunned, and my Brothers mates were transfixed on it too; my room became very crowded

                            5. I hated giving my money to arcade machines but when I did sucumb it was always a racer; lets say Daytona USA, my second favourite racing series.

It's all about the racers with me; sure I like other genre's but for me nothing comes close to the thrill of a great racing game.

                              1) "Father.... FAAAAAATHERRRRRRRR" I'm sure I could think of others, but the one that comes to mind is the whole intro of Shenmue; the day I realised games were really moving on at an incredible rate of speed.

                              2) Footballer of the Year 2 :/ FOTY1 was such a class game that I begged for ages to get the sequel on release. When I actually got my wish, I found it to be mucho ****. Ho hum.

                              3) The bear in La Pucelle Tactics

                              4) NiGHTS into Dreams. Just because I'm a ****ing master at it and amazed my friends at my linking skills.

                              5) Crime City and DJ Boy at the local swimming pool
