Super Tennis - The best sports game EVER?

Following on from the excellent F-Zero thread, I thought I’d post some memories of another SNES classic – Super Tennis.

This was another title I bought at UK launch. I remember reading C+VG’s glowing review of the game (along with the Japanese screenshot that showed a player shouting ‘****’ upon missing a shot). Along with F-Zero, this was the title I was dying to play on my shiny new PAL SNES.

It didn’t look like much and made very little use of the power of the console (aside from the rotating court when you switched ends – but even this looked a bit dodgy) but long after F-Zero had been completed and Super Mario World had given up all its secrets, I was still playing Super Tennis. However it wasn’t the single player side that kept my attention for so long – it was the excellent two-player mode. I remember spending hours playing against my dad and mates. This is one of the original multiplayer classics in my eyes. No matter how many times you played it, you always seemed to get better and improve your game somehow – the depth of the game engine was amazing. You could pull off loads of different shots using a combination of the buttons and the d-pad. The only negative aspect was the fact that perspective made it harder to play at the top of the court, but this quickly became part of the game itself, with players blaming missed shots on the fact that they were at the top and players who succeeded in winning sets whilst playing ‘up top’ felt an extra glow of satisfaction. At the end of the day you couldn’t complain as both players would have to play topside at some point and to be honest once you’d put a few hours in you could play at both ends of the court.

Virtua Tennis is the only game that comes close to rivaling this awesome title, but even that lacks the extra shot buttons that Super Tennis has, and ends up feeling more ‘basic’ as a result.

IMO no other sports title comes close to beating this.

I agree with super tennis, that game had DAYS of play amongst me and my friends. Hiro was the player of choice, and the 'evil serve' was outlawed. This is where if you are serving from the bottom right, you moved all the way to the right and tossed the ball, then held down-left on the dpad, R (for spin) and hit it with the soft hit button at the top of the throw. The resulting serve falls just ove the net going almost horizontally, and if you did manage to get to it, the opponent had the entire court to aim at.

The other game was 'hit the wolfman', where a winning shot had to hit one of the werewolf looking line judges.

I play Final Match Tennis version on PCE, its best to me just because i'm more familiar with it. Mad hard tho.

Best sportgames - ISS Pro Evolution 98 & PSOne Winning Eleven 7 for me.

I was always Mark, (Bottom Right Corner, I believe)

Awesome game, I agree best sports title it's the best Tennis game I've ever played too... I have no idea why they haven't added different modes and brought it out on the DS / GBA.

It's a while since I've played it, but who's the guy with the Danish Bacon Nose again. I always used to add curl to my serves and not tell anyone else how to do it!

When serving upwards I'd always Curl to the left and try to hit Leo the Lion (Line Judges) in the Nuts, Ouch! and it was a shame you couldn't hit the ball boys either .

In the SNES days Super Tennis was hard to beat - I guess it depends on what sport you favoured. Does Pilot Wings count as a sport title? If so I'd plump for that.

The whole game was just so relaxing to play, helped greatly by the elevator music.

                    brilliant game
i've also never played another tennis game as good...4 player smash court came close, but it just didnt have the same amount of style and class that this had.
especially with the comedy japanse names, and swearing of course...thats always good

Couldn't find a picture with 'Rats'.

The little tune when you change ends of court is catchy as well.

Smash Court Tennis has the cuter presentation and style, but Super Tennis reigns supreme when it comes to gameplay, the two-player mode stands up to the test of time IMO, and if you have two skilled players, it's pretty much one of the best VS games around.

Personally, it's not the best sports game, but one of them. My fave will always be the Winning Eleven/Pro Evo series. They are amazing in both single player and multiplayer.

Virtua Tennis is good, but it's too easy to play and lacks depth. Super Tennis is the only game that requires you to be proficient with all the buttons and the ways you can hit the ball.

I never really knew what the stupid Western names were until I picked up a complete copy of the US version for $1 last November. I'd always schooled myself on the SFC version with the "almost legal" charactature name and appearances

                              heres a funny thing.

We had the pal super tennis and there was a section at the back of the manual where you could write your notes (like all snes games) and my brother started writing a day by day account of his growing love for one of the characters. I think it might have been lisa.
It went a little like this:

"oh lisa, my love for you blooms with each passing day. who would have thought a boy could have such strong feelings for a poorly illustrated portrait of a none existing computer game character"

                              And so on........
