If people want to collect games in "mint cond" then so be it, who are you to criticise other people who obviously have a different opinion from yourself and enjoy collecting and playing games.

    Each to their own.

Same as 'C', the amount of **** condition games that I've recieved described as 'mint/mint+/ex' when they are not I'm willing to pay the extra for a sealed copy from a dealer, just for peace of mind. If I got it from a shop I'd send it back, but from private buyers????

Infact I'm suprised (as this is also a trading forum) that there isn't a grading guide of some description, listing faults (cracked case/scratched/fingered CD/dog-eared/water damage booklets etc) including a sliding scale. With games going for small amounts of cash, compared to new purchases and no comments......... , similarly paying a visit to the local game station for cheap used games, it's like looking through a dustbin.

If a trader doesnt give a descrip then you can ask for one, if the said item is not in the cond specified by the seller then contact a mod.

Good traders will tell you about any faults etc an item has straight away in there orig post

        Any probs contact a mod.

I don't understand why people are into Train spotting, stamp collecting, bird watching, scat films, etc. etc.
And I am sure I do loads of things that people don't understand, but we are all different, and if someone gets some joy from collecting an item or doing an activity then good on 'em.
It may be a strange way to start a post, but it's got people talking!

I don't think you understood my sentiment. I'm talking about people changing the nature of an item.

I know of no single game that was ever created to be left unopened on a shelf. Every single game that has been written has been designed for one of a few reasons. Maybe it was purely a money making venture as the poster that mentioned EA touched on. Maybe it was designed by someone who wanted to create a game that people would love to play. Maybe it's a combination of the two.

But what games were never designed to be were book ends. The effort that's invested in creating a game is wasted when it's not being appreciated in the manner it was intended to be.

Games are an Art form just as Music, Literature and Film are. Art can be commercial - there wouldn't be a massive Graphic Design industry if it couldn't be. But Art isn't kept concealed in a brown paper bag, Music is not played with the mute button pressed and Graphic Design is not targeted at the blind. So why have a game and not play it?

Take this analogy: You want to buy a car, you are loaded with money so you buy an Aston Martin DB7. Or, You aren't loaded with money so you buy a second-hand Ford Fiesta - If it gets you to the shops, then what's the problem? Horses for courses, but ultimately which ever car you buy, you drive. Who buy's cars to leave in a garage?

I agree with all the posters who look for pristine as opposed to sealed items to buy, I collect games and machines and I want them to look good so that they are both attractive and presentable (not laughable).

Funnily enough I do have a slight ginger tinge so to speak, only visible when my hair is really short and no gel in it.

i try to buy games in as good a condition i can find,if i had the money i would buy everything i have but in double, one for playing and using for my gaming side, and one in mint condition still in the cellphane to keep for my collectors side
that way i get the best of both worlds

Thank you. Some common sense when it comes to collecting.

At least you'll play the games and appreciate them for what they are. I have no problem with that. If you have the money it's your prerogative.

The whole point of my post was people I've met and know that don't even play the damn games, they buy them just because they are rare and sealed.

You could have made that point a little clearer in the first place. Especially as there's a huge difference between something that's in mint condition and one that's still factory sealed.

you need to watch out though, i bought a few playstation games on ebay that where labled as "factory sealed mint condition" i got them, took the cellophane off and to my shock the disc had scratches on and the manuals where creased on the corners, they must have had them shrink wrapped themselves, my mum used to work in currys and they had a machine in the back that could do that, so the person i got this "mint cond sealed" games from must have used one of those machines

But that's the thing, I know someone that does collect cars, he has a DB5 and an E-Type in his garage that are not driven, and while he owns them they never will be, but he gets alot of joy hunting for these raraties in their original form, the fact the E-type has under 5k on the clock makes it a real one off, and keeping it that way gives him great pleasure.

I will only buy retro games if they are in mint condition. Sealed is nice but rare and as long as I trust the seller that the item really is mint, then I'm happy.

Why do I do it? Because buying something and it arriving tatty and scruffy is a real turn off. Yes I can still play the game, which is the most important thing, but with retro games (especially the Japanese editions we all like) a part of the appeal is the gorgeous box art and manuals. They're just pleasing to look at, and so I like them to be as the game itself will be when being played - to be seen exactly as it was meant to be.

Scruffy boxes also look naff on my games shelf. Everything must be tip top.

Agreed.....Surely the 'minty fresh obsession' is only a problem if it's impacting on your general ability to fuction. If you're feeling increasingly guilty about the amount of money you're spending on games (or the fact that you occasionally 'borrow' from your children's money boxes), if you're negleting your family, friends or work to track down games (or surf the games forums), if you lie to yourself/others about the amount of money/time you spend on games, if you feel very anxious when you cause any slight damage to a game/game packaging (or simply at the thought of causing damage), or feel a tad defensive when someone starts a thread suggesting there may be something wrong with mint in box collectors.....
