dropzone was a poor mans defender, for me the character didn't have much control due to the speed he travelled across the screen
check out burai fighter, that is a quality game, sorta like side arms
elite i dont remember but it was good on home computers
new zealand story had a good conversion but the pce version for me is king
don't remember defender of the crown tbh

lettuce, maybe you should post which games you have to save us repeating them.
Probably no point in mentioning the well-known NES titles, but I really enjoyed Batman, Zelda 1 & 2, Bionic Commando and Life Force. I have Battle of Olympus which comes highly recommended, but I've yet to get around to playing it.
Apparently the NES version of Elite was very good indeed.

I had a feature on the Famicon (Japanese NES) printed in Retro Gamer recently. In it I list 15 unusual games.
Above all else, Id say try and get:
Vice: Project Doom (aka Gun-Dec)
Huang-Di (a Chinese bootleg)
Do you have a Famicom adapter? Im assuming you must have, since it's the only way to play the best NES games. (all 1000+ of them)

In contra, there are extra cinemas between each level. In most cases the West never had these chips to cut costs. I've actually written a big article on this, should be in print in RG in the next 6-8 weeks hopefully.
But yeah, Famicom is the way to go.
Lik-sang sell adapters for like only ?5, and its well worth picking one up.
