From the memory of my SNES days, I'd say they were both just as good as each other.
Word of warning though: Axelay suffers from "poor first level" syndrome.

I've actually played them both recently and my vote would go to R-type 3. It really is a suberb game, and consistently good all the way through. Although the music on the 2nd level of Axelay is timeless. I generally prefer vertical shooters to horizontal ones, but I thought the vertical stages of axelay were a bit dissapointing despite the great visuals.

Oh, and judging on SFC boxart alone R-type 3 trounces Axelay

Axelay was defently more enjoyable, R-Type 3 was rock, and for me Axelay felt the more quality game, with some excellent music!, not saying that R-Type 3 is a bad game, probably in the top 5 shoot em ups for the SNES, just prefered Axelay

Yeah was is it that Jap box art is always 10 times better than any other region, Super Ghouls N Ghosts is one that sticks in my mind

As a general rule Jap boxart has always been miles better. There is the odd exception, I think the US/PAL Castlevania IV has better art than the Jap one.

is probably my favourite shooter ever. The weapon select screen- distinctive levels which take place either vertically or horizontally- amazing bosses- sublime visuals throughout- haunting infectious tunes- mixed with gripping exciting gameplay- make this a AAA classic!

This game just oozes class. It never fails to amaze me how perfect a package it is. The opening level sets the tone- with fantastic graphics and a tune that builds to be one of the most memorable ever. Who can forget the ED209 boss- or the mind-blowing fire-level with a giant made of fire at the end.

Such a beautiful experience- brings a tear to my eye!

Axlay is a great looking snes game thats for sure and you can tell some of the boys that later went on to form Treasure had a hand in it.But...its just way to easy people rave on about the weapons system on it but to be fair it does n,t seen to matter what weapons you use bar a couple the ''round vulcan'' being one.Imho super Aleste is a better all round shooter and as for R-type 3 thats more of a shooter fans shooter (yes it is very hard,in a hard but fair kinda way) and i think its probably the best shooter on the snes/sfc bar Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie (which just pips it on the graphics front)

the main reason a lot of people seem to sight Axelay as the diffintive snes shooter is a, its probably the first descent/very good shooter they played on the snes as lets face it super r-type which had an earlier realease was ****e. b, Super R-type 3 was released 2 years later on in 1994 as a snes exclusive in Japan anyways i bought my pal copy in 1996 from Virgin for the princely sum of 20 quid and seemed to suffer from Irem earlier R-type snes effort.

After reading the posts i just had to put them both on tonight a give them a blast and ended up playing super Aleste. And Duddy ive got a spare complete copy of Axelay (usa version) and a complete copy of R-type 3 (pal) both in excellent nick i,ve also got both a spare super and 3 rtype in pal cart only (maybe a trade)so you to can compare both in a snes shooting nirvana but don,t blame me if you hanker after the delights that is super Aleste.
