Bizarre. I find Gradius 1-4 punishingly difficult, but Gaiden to be really quite easygoing in comparison. I need to play it more (something I never do with shmups, as I don't have the attention span and dedication I used to), but I can easily sail through the first few levels after a couple of warm-up plays.

I'd be inclined to agree. I think Gradius II & III are harder than Gaiden.
Great games and great series. As soon as you lose that first life though, it's as good as over.

Yeah, I turn off Gradius 1-4 when I lose the first life. No point going on

I like them all: Gradius, Salamander, Parodius. They are all a fantastic series of games.
