old'er' arcade games - standing the test of time

this post is generally to do with 2 games which i havent played in years but i maanged to play them both tonight

    the 1st in Killer Instinct

I used to love this game and i havent played it for many years

until this evening - managed to play it on Mame and its still incredible

took me a while but after looking at some webpages i've managed to pull off B Orchids ultra combo (40+ hits) and some more of her moves which includes flashing the opponent in a kinda death move

what made me laugh was the games announcer telling everyone that:

Killer instinct coming to the Ultra 64 in 1995

i was going to bed early tonight - but no this game has kept me up

    The 2nd is Rad Mobile
Recently i got into buying Saturn games and 1 of the games i wanted was Gale Racer, to be honest that game and elevator action returns kinda sealed the deal for me to buy Saturn stuff

anyway.... after playing Gale racer it was evident that it wasnt actually a conversion of the superb arcade game but a very very naff conversion of something that bears more resemblence to rad rally

but playing it on the emulator again - its just incredible, it has dated slightly but its still fun to play and i had a little 'hey i'm 17 again' giggle when i had to use the cars headlights/window wipers and a little sonic dangling from the rear view mirror

anyway which games do you love and still love today? the kinda game where no matter how it looks or plays you still love it and you will defend it at all costs

Shinobi by Sega (1987). The finest platform game ever created. Amazing level design, and fluid controls mean this is still an utter joy to play now (and yes, I still play it through to completion on one credit). It just feels so good to control Joe Mushashi!

I have been hooked on Bubble Bobble. What a game. I repeat: what a game.

Have you ever listened to fighting talk? I reckon you'd be bloody good at the final round there Buster (defend the indefensible).

I was under the impression that it was a faithful conversion of Rad Mobile. At least that's what was said at the time of release (and a quick glance at a few online reviews seems to support this as well).

not even close - the select menu is like rad rally, the cockpit is like rad rally - but rad rally also looks like rad mobile

the us version of rad mobile was gale racer in the arcades

but on the saturn the japanese home game was gale racer, when out there in the arcades its know as rad mobile </confused>

if it was only ever released on the saturn in Japan and it was a complete conversion why not call it rad mobile

**edit** and the levels arnt the same if it was a faithful conversion

Oh. I'm only going by what I've read on the net, TBH.

Get this lads - just spotted an amusement arcade in Southampton who are closing down - they have two Street Fighter 2 Champ Edition cabs in there and they are going to "dispose" of them (I made an enquiry). Woman in there reckons I may be able to have one for about fifty quid or even free if I collect - whooohooo! An arcade machine in my garage. Will be like a dog with two dicks if I score one of those!!! Ran it past my wife and she just gave the same resigned shrug as when I shelled out for a Neo geo - so could be ON!!!!!

You jammy get, its worth it just for the free cab! I hope you're looking forward to having lots of PCBs lying around!

Or you could flog the Neo and put an MVS board in there!

                      YAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!

Just spoke to the bloke concerned - said I can have a cab plus a game of my choice FOR FREE!!!!!!!!!!! (I collect though).

There are two SF2 cabs in one arcade, and two in another - he isn't sure what games are on the other one (I suspect one of them may be Double Dragon 2), but I am going to check them out later. He said if I want, he can remove the SF2 CE board and put it inside whichever cabinet I want. I cannot believe this bit of unbelievably good fortune!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

PLUS the missus is happy for me to have one!!!!!

                      Happy, happy days!!!!

I know. What a day. First of all Mad Gear gets married, then my brother in law rings to say his missus is expecting (gonna be an uncle!) then I get a free arcade machine. Plus the weather is nice, AND I finish early.
