    Axis Final Zone Senki (Megadrive)

Another Megadrive favourite of mine. This is an excellent isometric mech-based shooter from legendary software house Wolfteam (Earnest Evans, El Viento, Sol-Feace, Road Avenger).

I got the Japanese release second hand from my local importers way back in the early 90's and it came with a pack of limited edition postcards! Strange, but true.

The aim is to clear each area of enemies (which range from little drones to massive tanks and helicoptors) and once this is done you move onto the stage boss - and some of the bosses in this game are seriously impressive (considering it's an early MD release). Along the way you pick up different weapons that can be switched whenever you like.

The music is brilliant, I'd love to get the soundtrack for this but it's long since been out of print.

The game made it to the States with some amazingly bad coverart (no shock there then). Thankfully, aside from a different title screen the games are identical.

I tried it out on emulator but I wasn't impressed, not my cup of tea.

I was playing this a few weeks ago- but I didn't find much to like about it. The game has a very old-skool look to it, but I must admit there is something striking about it's simplicity. The actual gameplay isn't too exciting, but traversing the environments and fulfilling the objectives can be fairly gripping.

Definitely not a crap game, but not one I would be quick to recommend!

The Japanese box-art is very nice- and the American art looks pretty good too!

This, along with Insector-X and Arrow Flash were mainstays in a little games shop in my home town (Harlow, in Essex) at a time when there were absolutely no other importers around locally. At the time I was still getting Amiga stuff and they looked really exotic! Those titles are a great trigger for memory lane..... ahhh, I can feel myself drifting off even now.... better in the old days............
