    The Marty apreciation thread

    The FM Towns marty was a strange machine as it effectively is a PC in a console (see Xbox) with some custom hardware to display sprites. It was based on the Japanese FM Towns computer which had a nice CD tray which wouldn't hold a cup of Java even if you balanced it. Still at the time it was the most impressive console of it's time, with games that were a near arcade perfect as you were going to get before the Saturn was released. Sadly though as it was a PC in a console it still had a PC like price and unless you were that rich kid at high school that seemed to have all the new stuff as soon as it left the factory or you managed to find someone to buy a kidney it was sadly out of reach to frank gamer even if you could afford the console the games were a different matter altogether and sadly there is no market for transplant tonsils. Still you could have saved some cash by buying a Neo Geo...

    However now the console is slightly more affordable and now you could play those arcade perfect games, well sadly no again. It seemed that most Marty owners when they orginally bought the machine bought a time share in one game, so they could play it every 3rd week in March and now all the rich, ferrari driving collectors have bought most of the games that were made, at times it does feel like there were only 5 copies of Rainbow Islands released in Japan and unless you want to live on a kidney dialisis machine or you drive a ferrari you'll have to look towards cheaper methods of gaming. For example you could buy Viewpoint, a Neo Geo CD, a blow and still have change to have a few beers down the local bar (and maybe all at the same time too) for the same price Viewpoint would cost you on the Marty and it'll probably be easier to find too. Even Splatterhouse is probably easier and not much more expensive to buy as an Arcade board then the Marty version is.

    Still you could say you have a large collection by buying the fairly cheap Hentai games that seemed to be the really reason the Marty wash created, as this simple equation shows

    PC=Porn
    Console=!porn
    FM Towns Marty=PC therefore Marty = Porn
    FM Towns Marty=Console therefore Marty = Playable games that don't involve moving tanks across France to blow za Engvish up.

    As DOS/V, the PC-9801 and the FM Towns Marty all used the same processer and a very similar bios a few companies just made hentai games that would work on all three machines.

    So raise your jugs and toast the FM Towns Marty, making the Neo Geo look like a Sega 32X to collect games for and to play dodgy games with tenticles and pixelated parts that the wife won't suspect you are playing late at night.

    Oh and erm... I never saw a Marty outside of the mentions it got in early issues of Edge, Super Play and the Assembler site.
    Is there a good emulator of it?

      UNZ is the best emu for it out there.

      Marty = CD32

      I'd still like one despite the majority of playable games available on other systems.

        Actually I reckon the arcade board is cheaper than the Marty game these days. Seems to be about ?50 on ebay when it appears, which would be a very nice price for a minty Marty copy.

        As for the 32x, well if you go Pal there are 3 very rare games, that I'd probably rate as harder to find than most Marty titles I can think of off the top of my head, said 3 being Darxide, Primal Rage and T-Mek (only one pal T-Mek currently known to exist..doubtless 100s out there though)

        Edit..the Marty does ****ing rock though!

          I remember seeing Tatsujin 2 in Edge and thinking " If only I were rich! "

          This is a very impressive shooter!

            Tatsujin Ou is very good.

            You can also get Dead of the Brain 1 and 2 on the pce..last ever official scd release too. Shame its a text heavy adventure game though, a shade like snatcher. I'm sure its great if your japanese is good.

                  EDGE reviewed some for a few months. The aforementioned Tatsujin Ou being one of them.

                    I too am very interested in the Marty system. However, after trawling Google for many hours, I didn't really come up with much. There's also hardly any Marty softs on Ebay, and nothing really exciting, other than the 4 expensive titles that always seem to be listed. There is however, loads of issues of the OH! FM Towns magazine on Ebay atm.

                    Trouble is, I can't find any decent list of the FM-T titles produced, and whether these are Marty compatable or not. And I'd at least llike to know what decent games there are before I try to hunt down a machine.

                          Probably nothing that anyone's heard of. Of any significant note are the Ultima & Lucasart titles that are the only versions (?at least first) to have full CD audio/speech.

                            Yeah, I'm very interested in the Indiana Jones games. Never played them, so I may as well play the most obscure versions possible And they're fully in English. I assume the rest of the Lucasarts/Ultima titles have an EngLang option?

                            There's also RAM upgrade cards in 2 and 4Mb sizes that go in the IC card slot. Would the use of the 4Mb version then enable the playing of Rayxamber, KingdomGP etc on a Marty 1 / 2?

                            I've also seen a picture of a device that plugs into the rear expansion port on a Marty. It looks like it adds a printer port and a monitor connection (bring on the RGB Scart).

                            I think we need an information database with coverscans/screens/reviews of games and more info on the hardware. And maybe scans of Oh! FM Towns magazine. Currently, I can't go off on a crazy Marty buying mission. However, when I do I'd like to set-up a site for western Marty/FM-T owners with as much info as possible. Because the current state of affairs is quite shocking.

                              Your information is correct as far as westerners go, despite not being an owner I did have quite a Martyspasm for information while considering the option. Afaik, Super SF2 is meant to work on Marty with the ram expansion, but a member here (Big Al??) will tell you he's tried it to no avail. As far as game info goes, on the internet is near none. I have most of Gamefans Marty reviews in print, last i saw online were a turbo outrun review, seems to have vanished.

                              The expansion you talk of has been seen on Yahoo japan in recent times, the exact wat it does?? who knows, F<M Town printer seems the choice, other than that through parallel??

                              About the games you mentioned, seems a no no, afaik they dont require fm town expansion, its a Marty problem.
