PSX Game Cases

Just wondering what the deal is with Japanese PSone game cases. I though all NTSC-J CD games came in standard (or slightly thicker) CD cases. However, some of my Japanese PSone games, Time Bokan and Gunners Heaven, have cases just like PAL PSone games (except a couple of bits are grey instead of clear). I first though that maybe budget games came like this, as I only had R-Types & Delta on ''R's the Best''. But some original release games like Captain Commando and Einhander are in CD jewel cases too.

So, were PAL style cases used for a certain time period, or just randomly? Do any Japanese games exist with both CD and PAL style cases?

I think the earlier and double disc games used the larger style cases.

I've come accross 3 different types of case, 4 depending on how anal you want to be.

Standard Jewel case just like Saturn/DC
Double-CD case just like Saturn Double CD
PAL-style thick case - black/grey "spine" and bigger than either of the above.

The PAL-style case also comes in 100% clear style too.

I wish they were all the same. Biohazard 2 looks a bit rubbish on the shelf because it's smaller than the rest.

Theres Also another style. The ****ty 'psone books' case! Its a super thin case that doesnt even hold the manuals.

The ones I got (Gradius gaiden and Castlevania SOTN) had full manuals. Though Metal gear intergral (psone books) is better, it comes in a nice clear double cd case with a full manual but no back inlay.

Some of the standard jewel cases use a slightly different front piece of the case if you want to be really anal - Captain Commando and Goemon Shin Sedai Shuumei both do. The little raised bits of plastic that hold the manual in place are different than usual.
