Classic Games - Atomic Robokid (Megadrive)

My first memory of Atomic Robokid was a tiny news piece in Mean Machines, which said the game featured 'Dusty Bin with Lasers' (this got my interest right away, as you can imagine). I picked up an imported copy when I got my Megadrive.

It's not a 100% 'classic' by any means - the game is basic, there's little in the way of originality and the gameplay doesn't really change at any point. However I still play on it even today because it offers some nice, mindless blasting action.

The basic aim is to get from one end of the level to the other. It's like a shooter, but you can land and walk, as well as backtrack through the level. There's several different collectable weapons that can be changed at any point. There's also some really huge bosses to fight as well.

This can be had for peanuts on ebay, and it was released on the PCE and several other home computers too.

Got this recently for about 3 quid, though haven't actually played it yet.

Was the R-TYPE style graphics that got me interested, plus I remembered it from seeing it in mags back in the day. I'll check it out the next time I'm having an MD session.

Ive also wanted to get my hands on this since seeing it in Mean machines/the compleate guide to consoles, and when i finally get my 1st megadrive, about 200 years too late! (or when it arrives next week) i'll be after a copy. It always looked pretty nice to me, got a pal release too i think?

Ahhh, The Complete Guide To Consoles...how great was that? At one point during my early teenage years, this was like a Bible to me, I carried it everywhere. I read it on the toilet, I read it in bed, I took it to school, I even took it away on holiday with me once.

Does anyone where I might be able to find a copy? Ebay don't seem to have anything at the moment.

Atomic Robo Kid is one of my favourite games ever. The main character is this ultra cute robot that just looks superb. The firepower he uses to dispose of the enemy is awesome. Mix all this with sharp effective visuals and nice sound- and you have a classic title.

I first played it on the PCEngine, then the arcade and finally the Megadrive. All three versions are fantastic and worth owning!

I was a tiny kid and TCGTC was my bible. I'm fairly sure there were two editions of it. I remember the screen-shots always made even the poorest games look attractive, especially the then mythical PCEngine titles that always looked amazing in the shots!

There were in fact four volumes of the Complete Guide (I'm 99% sure anyway). I've got the one with the blue cover and ESWAT is the main image. There was also one with Super Mario World on the cover.

I love that bit of text on Duddy's scan of 'TCGTC IV'

                      NEO GEO!
                      ARE THE
                      GAMES
                      REALLY
                      WORTH
                      ?150.00?

If only we had known then what we know now...?150.00 now seems like a right bargain, especially if MS1, Kizuna Encounter or Mark of the Wolves among others were on your shopping list but I'm guessing that ?150.00 was for the likes of Magician Lord & The Super Spy not the later releases.

What is the name of the AES game that is featured next to the text on that scan?

BTW, I really want 'TCGTC Volume One' any cover scans Duddy?

No idea what the game is, I recall seeing that exact same screenshot in Mean Machines too.

As for CGTC Volume one, I'm sure I had it but I can't remember what was on the cover. I'm guessing it's quite a collectors item these days.
