    Snk/Neo Geo home convertions

Thought it might be intresting to get a list going of Neo geo conversions that have been released on other formats. As lists are not that intresting, try and inculde your comments on the game, its qualtiy or otherwise, how it compares to the original and rarity/value if known. Feel free to include game on all formats up to the ps2/xbox etc as the games themselfs are retro if the machines arent.

    My favourites?

Real Bout/Real Bout Special (PS1 + Saturn) - the PS1 recieved a commendable conversion of Real Bout, which has fantastic music (the Mai Shiranui music in particular is astonishing), although try and get an NTSC version for no borders etc.

Real Bout Special on the Saturn is as good as it gets Fatal Fury-wise on other home consoles. Great graphics, loading times aren't the worst, love it.

Most of the 16 bit SNK stuff is crap, tbh - although a little ripple per-lease for the Super Famicom version of Fatal Fury Special - easily the equal of the equivalent Capcom fighters on 16 bit Ninty.

Although the excellent value KOF 00/01 pack, subsequent 02 + 03 releases, and the superb Slug conversions are the tits on PS2 if you don't own a Neo, the DC has recieved the best Neo conversions, I reckon - some of which have been "improved" from the originals.

The confusingly-named King Of Fighters Dream Match 99 is a great little version of the awesome, series-best KOF 98, whilst King Of Fighters 99 Evolution takes KOF 99, adds a bootiful anime intro and spruced up pseudo-3D backgrounds. Garou and Last Blade 2 also recieved commendable conversions, as did KOF 00-02, all solid, all easily as good as the PS2 releases.

Honourable mentions go to: Twinkle Star Sprites (DC), Cool Cool Toon (DC), KOF 95-97 (Saturn), and the unusual, strangely alluring Fatal Fury - Wild Ambition on the PS1 (worth buying cheap for the intro alone in which Geese knocks off Terry's pops). SVC Chaos is a good conversion, but a poor single player game.

I hope to pick up the recent SNK related stuff (Re-Bout, Neowave, Colloseum etc) but I am sure someone like eastyy can give us an idea what some of those are like.

Re-bout is really for the completists.Kof 94 with redrawn graphics (think there higher res). They look good in still shots but unfortunetly the animation is quite bad.The new 3d backgrounds are quite good though. Also they have added a hits counter. They have probably changed some combos/moves but i have not played the original one much.

Twinkle star sprites for the ps2 is good.Really its a new game with 3d graphics. But the same gameplay mechanics as the original game. Also as a bonus it has the original neo geo version (after alot of play).

Kof 2003 for the ps2 is a better then average conversion. They have added 3 backgrounds.Though it makes the main characters look worse then they really are

One question about real bout fatal fury for the saturn. Are the colours muted?.I saw a video of real bout fatal fury for the neo geo and it seemed it was brighter and more colourful

King of fighters 94 Re Bout is worth owning for the music alone in my opinion.

I agree with the Dreamcast efforts, pretty good.

I was wondering how Garou compares on PS2 to the AEs original.

I have got Real Bout Special on the Saturn and found it to be lovely and bright. Not as bright as the awesome, sublime colour-ness of RB2 on the Neo though. That is like kicking the **** out of each other in some wonderful cartoon world.

Its taking me a few years but finally i'm of the opinion that in general ports are inferior to the original except in instances where something significant has been added and not just some gallery. I don't want to incite a debate over this but this is how i feel. Saturn, Ps1 conversions are all inferior (not by much) in comparison to their MVS.AES counterparts and they still couldn't get it right with the DC with the Garou port which is dreadful (smaller sprites, out of sync sound). Xbox/PS2 ports are all pretty tight though but Ignition screwed SVC Chaos; i have it on xbox and quite honestly playing the rom (i know, i know) on the same machine is a better experience.

Unfortunatly for me, this sort of ethos has lead me to start a small but nonetheless costly neo geo collection!!!

Nightstalker is spot on really - they ARE generally inferior - but let's face it unless you go down the MVS route, AES copies of some of the games mentioned are veeery expensive and could potentially lead to financial ruin. The boxes are nice, mind.

I did hear that the waku waku 7 saturn version was inferior to the neo geo version.

I would have to play it though to see

I still think there is a HUGE irony for the neo geo.The fact ARCADE version games are so much cheaper then the home ones.Seems ludicrous really

Iv'e opted for the mvs route as it happens with the view to ultimately acquire a nice cabinet in which i could house the mobo. Its cheaper than AES and i'm only after a few kits - LB, SVC, ROTD, SS4 and MOTW. Nothing too ambitious.

Superdanx check out neo-geo.com, theyve had many heated debates about ports vs originals and you'll find all the info you need there. I can only offer a generalisation but those guys will tell you about individual discrepancies. Also gamefaqs, the guys who write the faqs often include a bit on the differences.

the one i have on my PC are spot on

been there and done that - Ports are inferior (ps2 garou is spot on as is all the slugs) but they are still worth the money considering what you would splash out on a home cart

Fatal Fury Special and Samurai Shodown on the GameGear (converted by Takara who, I believe, did the majority of SNK 8- and 16-bit conversions) are both very good considering the host platform.
There's also Samurai Shodown on Gameboy.
And Samurai Shodown for 3DO, which IMO is cock but most others around here think different.

There were some conversions to the mega cd wasent there?'

Seem to remember a fatal fury (think it might have been the special version) and possibly a samurai shodown conversion for it dont know what they were like

Compared to a homecart they are definetly preferred when they are close to perfect but what with mvs prices being around that of new ps2 games i'd actually still prefer the rigmarole of setting it all up to play the games in their original incarnation. I'm definetly becoming a purist these days and will probably delve further into the retro scene despite the dawn of a new hardware generation. I did the same when xbox/ps2/ gc came out, i stuck with teh dc and then developed a saturn obsession although that went no where, as i couldnt win auctions to save my life for some reason!
