I liked Rez and it has some nice music (Areas 1 and 3), but I never saw what the big deal about it was myself.

Does anyone know why it was called REZ?

REZ is directly or indirectly a reference to resonance. Resonance is an extremely important factor in sound in general and synthesizing sounds on a synthesizer. The title REZ of the Underworld song is a reference to resonance or (a) resonator, I believe, considering resonance is an important element in the song.
Regardless, the similarities between the UW song REZ and the general mood and even compositional properties of the songs in REZ are quite stunning. But more over the sound design of REZ is quite a kin to the sound of the UW-song.

Funny thing happened this morning, I've just re-bought a PS2 so I've been trying to get hold of the games I used to have. Anyway, Rez popped through the letterbox this morning (Jp version, I'm not made of money) and I ran upstairs as if propelled by a summer breeze to sample it's delights once more. Flicked on the TV and before the picture came on I heard "Synaesthesia is REAL". For a second I thought it was God talking to me*, but then the picture came on and I realised it was actually a documentary on BBC2.
Strange that it should happen at that precise moment, I could probably count the number of times I've heard the word 'synaesthesia' on TV on one hand.
*This happened once before a few years ago when a friend of mine hadn't bothered to turn his Playstation off with ISS Pro Evolution 2 in the drive. I saw the clouds on the title screen and heard a booming "ISS PRO EVOLUTION 2!" and became convinced it was God speaking to me from heaven. Obviously, it was only Tony Gubba. And yes, I was on acid.

I'd say Rez is from the resonance setting of a filter on a synth. Rez is the key to squelchy acid basslines in most dance, it's also used for that filtering out drum effect and basically all kinds of sounds you'll know and love.
Self oscilating filter mmmmmmmmmmmm
Edit: Ah I see somneone else thought of that. Lovely!

That wikipedia link only gives a passing mention to Kandinsky! My (art degree) bro told me about him once, he wasn't inspired by synaesthesia, he actually suffered from it - his brain was wired up wrong. Kandinsky's paintings are great.. huge big ones and tiny wee ones alike. I love that kind of abstract stuff.

I used to mess around with old samplers and effects units in my spare time and the satisfaction I used to get out of putting a high frequency sound through my beaten up old Akai S3000i was amazing, especially when reducing the resonance.
Regarding Tony Gubba, he is God as far as I'm concerned, love hearing him commentate on those classic FA Cup 3rd giant killing stories. Gubba owns Motty as far as I'm concerned.Last edited by Q-Bass; 24-01-2006, 12:32.

There was a question about Rez ages ago on university challenge, something along the lines of "Which artist was said to have creatively inspired the recent videogame Rez?" or something like that.
