The music in SOR3 is very much a product of the time - in the mid-90's there was a techno explosion and I think Yuzo Koshiro was simply experimenting with that style of music. The trouble is, the poor old MD's sound chip wasn't up to the task and therefore everything ended up sounding pretty bad.
I didn't mind the music that much, but then I think the first game has the best tunes of the series. The music in SOR2 is good but it gets really annoying on some of the levels, whereas the music in the first title just seems to 'fit' perfectly and doesn't grate on you at all. Plus this intro music is amazing - it knocked me off my seat when I heard it for the first time.
Gameplay-wise, SOR3 is a real progression from the second game and I don't think there's much between them - both are excellent and well worth owning.
