Originally posted by muse hunternope your not alone i prefer shenmue 1 myself. Shenmue 2 is more technically impressive so is favoured more by those who aren't big fans of the series.
The reason Shenmue II stands above the original is because it conveys the sense of a journey and being placed in a foreign land (whereas there was a separation between the player and Ryo in this department in one, both are on level-pegging in the second game)... I also think the characterisation is better handled. All the links and people you get to know in Hong Kong, the relationships you build with them
and then having the chance to say goodbye was fantastic. As was the move over to Kowloon and the complete change of pace and buddy act with Ren, where for the first time, Ryo actually meets someone who changes him and you can actually perceive as a true companion throughout the game. Ren's a livewire and his contribution and shift to the tone benefits the sense of involvement and unexpectedness immensely. Then after all that, (the Yellow Head for ****'s sake! Gob-smacking), you've got one of the most wonderous come-downs to ever happen in videogaming (Guilin), where you finally get to meet the mysterious Shenhua, discover what Shenmue is and end on that bombshell. We're talking a completely unexpected end sequence of four hours. Amazing, glorious stuff.
Shenmue has its strong points too. It really captures that intimate, small town feel. And the closeness Ryo has with his family, friends and Nozomi is conveyed really well - it's also better paced, imo. However it doesn't have anywhere near the standout 'omg!'moments that Shenmue II has throughout the course of its adventure.
Personally I don't prefer to think of them as two separate games. played back-to-back they make perfect sense together and compliment each other superbly.

I owned the Sega Master System (PAL), the Sega Meadrive (JAP) and a Dreamcast (PAL.)
I think my favorite was/is the Megadrive.
I was 15 and at Secondary school, and had been following the news of the new "Mega Powerful" console in the magazines. A couple of us had been saving like mad and then the day came.
Adams World had the consoles in stock and I made an order for the Megadrive, Thunderforce II and Ghouls & Ghosts. They game me Alex Kidd for free, and the total came to a massive ?290. My entire savings
The reason that the console has such a place in my heart, is that for years since the speccy we had been chasing the idea of an "Arcade Perfect" console game. When I fired up the console and the Ghouls and Ghosts "Dummmm dad de de da" music kicked in, I was in heaven. Then started the all night sessions and high score obessions that still haunts me today.
So that's why the Megadrive is my favorite Sega console. It was a really special time, and great fun.

Either way talking shenmue makes me sad as i know there is never going to be another (f**kin sammy ripping the heart out of sega). But i've got my own story to wrap it all up, at the end of chapter 2 Ryo thinks "**** this" "i'm wasting my time and i'm probably going to get killed anyway, i think its time to let go and finally move on". Ryo then heads back home where he spends most of his days playing space harrier and visiting gay bars. The end.

Dreamcast all the way for me. A superb console, which, for a one on one 2D fighting fan like myself, has some of the best conversions around. Alpha 3, street fighter 3, 'vs' series, king of the fighters, guilty gear. Also has some amazing arcade conversions like virtua tennis 1 & 2, crazy taxi, house of the dead 2, and soul calibur!
The saturn was always a console which I liked, but never loved. There was far too many sloppy conversions from the arcade and the ps1: House of the dead, battle arena toshindin, resident evil and daytona were the worst offenders. The nail in the coffin for me that is out of all the sega consoles, the saturn seems to have aged the worst, with a lot of the games looking like crap now.

Are SEGA just a much smaller developer now? Where have all the games gone...I would rate it 10/10.
My favourite SEGA console is the Dreamcast, it could have been the "3D-SNES!!" (imagine the DC + Resident Evil IV + Gradius V + Winning Eleven + Shenmue 3 + Virtua Fighter 4 Evo etc.).
Megadrive has not my type of games (I don't like Disney games, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Gunstar Heroes, Mortal Kombat etc.)
.....
but Streets Of Rage OWNED Final Fight!

I would have to say that the Sega Megadrive come first place in my opinion. So many great memories, past and present. Great selection of games and just fun to play. As a piece of product design, I think it still looks fantastic sitting under the television.
However, since my recent Saturn purchase, it's good some hot competition!

i can't decide. i've got a saturn and dc here, and i'm planning on a megadrive for some strange reason.
whenever i'm frustrated at how gaming's become, or how much i hate gaming and wanna just give up on it entirely, i'll have a quick bash at streets of rage 1/2 on my xbox and that always sorts things out.
i haven't touched my saturn/dc in ages, although i did dust the saturn off last summer when we got our widescreen telly as i wanted to play nights in 16:9 :d
but thanks to Mad Gear i've now got a mini saturn+pad dangling off my phone so i'll go for saturn

As much as id like to say the saturn, it was jus so painful getting games for it back then. I was constantly being dissapointed with the quality of some of the games when compared to the PSX.
Also, games back then cost an arm and a leg, in a local indie it was like ?80 a pop! I felt so.......... guilty spending my parents hard earned dosh to get the games. I hated myself for wasting so much for crappy ass conversions of arcade.
Also, i and a handful of peeps had the console cos everyone else sold out to the PSX.
It was hard times................. there were some cool games when i could eventually get my hands on them. I think the olny game i was totally imersed by was Virtua Fighter 2 and Castlevania. Nights for some strange reason failed to really grab me, i read into all the hype and was left totally disillusioned
But ima hafta say that the DC was the highlight for me when it came to a good ole fashioned sega console.
Graphically it could compete with the ps2 and the games were so imaginative. And............... affordable! yes, i could finally buy decent games at reasonable prices. No more grainy CG videos and no more dodgy 3D graphics. I knew i had somthing special in my hands, its kinda the same feeling i have for the game cube. Some things feel right............ and feel as if they have been properly designed by peeps who care and have taste.
Shame i cant feel the same about the xbox. Its jus like bubba Sparxx says "ugly..............."
So yeah the DC, great games that felt like games, good prices, and believability!
