I actually find the first level a bit irritating to be honest, just go into ex-up mode and run through the stages holding the fire button down, switch to the blue wave bomb as your special weapon then pop up and use those on the targets you're supposed to destroy.
When you start getting more special weapons, and you start doing the other levels, it gets a lot better. For instance, your special weapon power charges according to light, and the second level is set underground. You have to find these patches in the ceiling, shoot them so that light falls down, and use those as recharge points so you can't overuse your more powerful weapons.
