    sci-fi & military tactics

    turn-based, console-style prefferably

what is there besides advance wars & front mission, I'd like to know more games of this kind..

Im considering battalion wars for my cube right now (not retro I know; also I dont own a ps2 or box), is it good If I'm looking for a newer, futuristic/military tactics game?

    thanks,

The two Fire Emblem games on the GBA and the Cube incarnation have RPG leanings, but are essentially very similar to Advance Wars in terms of gameplay.
In my opinion they are in fact superior, allowing as they do greater scope for imposing the player's own tactics. Each one player map/stage in AW tends to have a 'solution', whereas in FE the way each battle pans out can vary wildly depending on what you have brought to the party in terms of the type and level of your units and their equipment.

The tactic's Rpg player is in the house so here goes. I'll list if they play more like Front Mission [FM] or Advance War [AW]

      MD
      Shining Force 1 & 2 [FM]
      Langrisser 1 & 2 aka Warsong [AW]

      SNES
      Fire Emblem 3,4 & 5 [FM]
      Bahamut Lagoon [AW]
      Front Mission [FM]
      Monster Hunter G [FM]
      Ogre Battle [AW]
      Tactic's Orge [FM]
SNES Wars (Advance Wars Prequel) [AW]
      Feda: Emblem of Justice [FM]

      Nes
      Fire Emblem 1 & 2 [FM]

      N64
      Ogre Battle 64 [AW]

      Saturn
Dragon Force 1 & 2 (A bit different to the other games) [AW]
Shining Force III Scenario's 1,2, 3 & Premium Disc [FM]
      Iron Storm [AW]
      Mystaria 1 & 2 [FM]
      Black Matrix [FM]
Feda Remake: The Emblem of Justice [FM]
      Vandal Hearts [FM]
      Wachenroder [FM]
      Ogre Battle [AW]
      Tactic's Orge [FM]
      Soldnerschild [AW]
      Master of Monsters [AW]
Terra Phantastica (A bit different to the other games)[AW]
      Langrisser 1,2,3,4 & 5 [AW]
Super Robot Wars F & F Final [FM]

      Dreamcast
Langrisser Millennium (More like Dragon Force) [AW]
Hundred Swords (More like Warcraft III)

      GBA
      Fire Emblem 6,7 & 8 [FM]
      Shining Force Remake [FM]
      Tactic's Orge 2 [FM]
      Final Fantasy Tactics [FM]
      Onimusha Tactics [FM]

That a list of most of the better one's I've played, they all follow the tactics formula for battle, a couple differ slightly but they are well worth playing.

I have no love of the PSOne nor had I played any of the tactics games on it, but if you want a couple here a few that I heard about.

          Feda 2
          Front Mission 2 & 3
          Final Fantasy Tactics
          Vandal Hearts 1 & 2
          Ogre Battle [AW]
          Tactic's Orge [FM]
Spectral Force 1 & 2 (Dragon Force on the PSOne, made by the same team)

I haven't played it, so perhaps someone who has will confirm it, but Rebel Star Tactical Command on GBA might be something you'd enjoy, as is AoE II on DS and the Advance Wars rip off whose name I've forgotten on PSP (not exactly retro, I realise.)

            ETA Field Commander on PSP.

Tactics Ogre is in english on the PS1, unlike the Saturn and SNES versions, so it might be worth taking a look at that. Also worth trying Vandal Hearts (don't think this was released in english on the saturn either). And don't forget, Arc the Lad Collection, you get Arc 1, 2 and 3. I havn't played 3 but 1 and 2 are fantastic.

Yeah, Rebelstar isn't at all bad, its very much in the style of laser squad/xcom and indeed the old 8bit rebelstar games, which isn't surprising as it's by the gollop brothers. It's pretty enjoyable, although not quite as deep as xcom.
