Rainbow Islands - the blue star

Yesterday I was playing Rainbow Islands and for the only time in 15 years a blue star appeared when I killed multiple enemies at once. I collected it and 5 large money bags the size of the level end diamond or the large items you get when you collect the cane in Bubble Bobble fell from the top of the screen.
Has anyone else ever seen it? Has anyone got any idea how to reliably make it appear?

Seeing as its one of my most favourite taito games ever here is a list of everything.

      Which version was it?

IIRC, in the arcade version collecting a red lamp would have a similar effect - I believe that you had to collect a certain number of red stars for it to appear. Don't recall ever seeing a blue star before though.

I Rainbow Islands. Might have a session on it this afternoon.

Sounds like the blue star you got was a comet, which according to the list does a random powerup which it must have chosen the red lamp so you got the money bags.

Love the amount of secret stuff in RI you can play for years & never see it all.

I know what you mean - seeing that list on the link you posted has reminded me quite how much stuff they managed to cram into the game.

Same thing with Bubble Bobble; its a game you can play through countless times and never see everything the game has to offer. True classics.

Time to dig out my copy of BB/RI collection for the Saturn I think.

On the mobile phone version made by Taito for Vodafone Japan you can collect some star that will render you invisible for the entire level !!

Thanks for that list. It may well have been that comet, yes, and yeh it is the arcade version. I've never seen that item before in about 15 years of playing the game though which is funny coz I often collect the crosses and stuff.
My least favourite power-up is the book which gives you wings, coz I can't resist collecting it but I'm so crap when I have it. Love the blue ring, get that on most stages, great fun to waste time near the top of a level walking on a safe platform until the Hurry Up appears

The book of wings happens to be my favourite powerup & totally invaluable when you get to doh's island.

I one day dream of owning the jamma board sitting in a nice candy cab.

People also say this about the climb on round 14. You know how to climb constantly, right? You just have to hold jump and time your rainbows right and you can go upwards constantly. The big risk is that something will fall on your head though

Yes almost, just by SNK instead of SEGA.

Ah right. I know the one. They have the LCD monitor at the top of some of them in the retro arcades in the next city. We only have the Astro City cabs here.

I think the term Candy Cab is just a term for all japanese-style arcade cabinets (i.e. usually moulded white plastic with monitor, as opposed to our 'woodies')

Bingo, thats what i was meaning, those lovely generic white cabinets that you see everywhere in japanese arcades.

Sadly the rainbow islands pcb would cost more than the cab as its rare as hell & very expensive.

Interesting. Every time I've looked for one it's been in the region of ?80-120. A few years back I saw one for $110, which I was going to buy but had to go to Australia instead. But they're hardly rare, and certainly not what a collector would call expensive. The Extra version, on the other hand...
