I've always had a soft spot for Rastan games.

Saint Sword (Taito - MD ), very Rastany but you can use various half animal transformations so a little bit altered beast in that respect but the level lay outs are more involved.

I really enjoyed Volgarr the Viking which has recently received a sequel. Master System Rastan is great too.

            A genre i like.

Black Tiger - arcade, personal favourite one of capcoms best
Rygar - arcade, and a good nes port.
Switchblade 2 - Megadrive homebrew port, otherwise i always have a soft stop for the speccy version back in the day, awesome music. Amiga version has a more anime like sprite
Tiger Road - arcade ok'ish old capcom game
Astyanax - arcade, been playing it the last few weeks on evercade, pretty tough as it always through baddies at you.
Lightning Swords - arcade, another ok'ish game i've been playing on evercade, for 91 game it had a manual block where others at the time generally had a you pick up a shield for auto blocks as long as you didn't attack.
Magic Sword - arcade/snes - a follow up to Black Tiger i don't like as much.
Legendary Axe series - PC Engine
Master of Darkness - Master System
            Ex-Mutants - MD, a very western/euro core style game
Ninja Warriors - arcade, snes port and the recent remake(which i haven't played)

            famous games
Shinobi series - MD specially 3rd, arcade for 1
Strider series - i like Psone version of 2 which got remade on PS4
Castlevanias - one i like the most is Bloodlines/Rondo of blood you'll have your pick from Megadrive/PC engine or the later PSP port
Splatterhouse arcade and MD version of 2

I used to love Saint Sword. Still have my original Japanese copy that I bought as a kid. Still looks brand new too 👍

you guys are giving me strong vibes to go and turn my Series S into the ultimate hack n slash retro machine... (or just a general emulation machine - just hack n slash would be crazy...... but I'd be there)

Not sure if Wonderboy in Monsterland is a hack and slash or platformer, however in my mind it's a hack n slash and one of the GOATS. Other faves mentioned above Rastan Saga, Black Tiger, Rygar, Golden Axe, Shinobi

All of the above I only played in arcades. I spent a significant portion of the 80's and early 90's in arcades

I've just done that with my SS, though I've gone fully loaded. For £14.40 (dev mode) it's well worth it. The SS is such a beast for emulation.
Go for it, you won't regret it.

Back on topic, Splatterhouse is a fav of mine. Is 2 crude dudes classed as a hack and slash?

How did you go about this? I had turned my Series S into Dev Mode a while back but MS did something to reset it, but I didn't look back into it.

I suppose if I was being harsh, then CrudeBusters/2 Crude Dudes, wouldn't pass as a hack n slash on a 2D plain, but hey they do hack! Using sign posts, metal bars and cars! Dragon Ninja, Ninja Warriors... damn the genre is so rich isn't it?

Eh? Two Crude Dudes is a beat-em-up. They can pick up weapons for sure but using their fists/wrestling moves is the default.

I've learnt today that it has a 3rd name of Two Crude and it's the sequel to Bad Dudes Vs DragonNinja..

At a guess, I would say you just need to go to the xbox developer program website and re-register your console to your account. Dev mode is a 1 time payment so it can't be that.

Managed to get the Series S set up with Retroarch again. I have it loaded with Megadrive, PC Engine, SNES, NES and Master System content (I need to add MAME). I really want to start making a playlist of 2D plane, hack n slash side scrolling games like Cadash.

If yous can be bothered to help in even contributing 1 or 2 titles, that would help greatly

So far, I've got...(in no particular order or wheather it's highly rated or not)... probably need to get the arcade counterpart of some of these too...

                              Cadash (PC Engine / Megadrive)
Rastan Saga II (PC Engine / Megadrive)
                              Rastan (SMS)
                              The Legendary Axe (PC Engine)
The Legendary Axe II (PC Engine)
Rygar (NES / SMS / Lynx)
                              Tiger Road (PC Engine)
Wonderboy in Monsterland (SMS / PC Engine / NES)
Wonderboy III The Dragon's Trap (SMS)
