    Super Famicom questions...

Hi, couple of questions on the Super Famicom...

Can it play all US NTSC games with just an adapter or if the slots been modified to take the cart? (reason i ask is cus its at least in English were as the Jap game isnt!).

Is there a list anywhere on the web of which PAL games will play with what adapters (eg Pro Action Replay 1, 2, 3)? (I understand PAL Mario World flickers with some adapters for example?!).

Did Mario All Stars come out in the Jap or US markets as i can only find it on PAL whereever i look?

    TIA!

    1) Afaik yes, as long as the adapter has extra slots for the DSP chip games.

    2) Don't know of one offhand, someone else might though.

    3) Yep was released in all three markets. Europe and the US also got the lot harder to find cart that has both Mario AS on it AND Super Mario World together.
Lie with passion and be forever damned...

It's called Super Mario Collection in Japan.

The Japanese version slot is not modable unless you wreck the top cover of the machine, which isn't really advisable because it's pretty. People generally only mod the slot (i.e. remove the plastic retainer) from the US version as it has the big rectangular cart slot that can physically take all cartridges (but won't run PAL ones). If you're not bothered about the appearance of your system, get a US one because it makes everything easier, but everyone knows the SFC is sexiest You don't need any sort of cartridge adaptor to fool it though as SFC and US SNES hardware internals are identical.

Also, even though they look like they should as the extra connectors inside are just straight through, many adaptors for some bizarre reason don't support the SuperFX chip or some of the more rare ones such as the ones used in Megaman X3 and Star Ocean. My Action Replay 3 doesn't, and for some reason even though it's got a pass-through slot, my Super Wildcard DX2 refuses to play US Yoshi's Island on my Super Famicom and Japanese Starfox on my US system. On those odd occasions when the wife wants to play Yoshi's Island I just take the lid off my SFC, coz the US SNES is ugly and I can't be arsed to get it and its different PSU out and set it up.

FYI as stated Pal Mario All Stars and Super Mario World will both flicker when run at 60Hz, no matter whether you use an adaptor or you have a switched system, so you'll be wanting a version specifically designed for 60Hz.

          Everything correct here..

Of course you could get the system modded.. 50/60hz and lockout enable/disable switch (both tucked away at the rear) and then simply use a regular pass-through adaptor to play US games, as someone whos SFC I modded recently is now doing quite happily - thereby not having the cartridge slot altered in any way.

          Contact if interested.

I have a lot of converters as well, I might make a small table of results for which games work with what sometime actually.. got unbranded ones, honey bee ones (i think?), fire ones, datel pro, datel expert.. loads

Probably datel pro is the best, it has a little switch for better compatibility.

Indeed the PAL SMW and SMA will flicker at 60hz.

Is there any other PAL games which flicker when run at 60Hz?

Because the SWC DX doesn't have Super FX support.

Quite a few Nintendo releases have trouble in 60Hz, especially the Mario titles. For fun results, try Super Tennis and FIFA Soccer on a 60Hz system. The PAL releases were optimised to run the same speed as the NTSC versions, so you get them running at around 120% speed

Besy bet is to get a PAL system and have a switch fitted and the region lockout disabled. However some games like Super Mario RPG won't run with the lockout disabled.

                Thanks for the help everyone.

I have just got my SFC this morning, i won it on eBay:-

It came with a Sega PSU, 240v input and a 10V 1.2A output....i assume this plugs directly into the back of the SFC?! (i have read of converters and stuff for the PSUs u see....).

I dont know how good the Game adapter is, its called a "Games Master" with 2 slots....i assume the front slot for US/PAL games and the rear for Jap games when a PAL game is fitted. Is the "Games Master" a decent adapter or not?!

I'll be interested to see how the PAL version of Mario Kart is on the flicker front, it should run at 60Hz though....

                Cheers, Stu

Yea but its not for show....when you have a 2 1/2 year old running around i wanted to spend less money and not worry about it to much!
There was a mint one that went for ~?75 so i'd of gone for that if i was wanting a cosmetically nice unit.

I've got one of these. It works best for playing US/JPN games on a PAL console. You can also use it to play PAL games on a SFC, but it doesn't work with games that do a 50/60Hz check before booting which is a significant proportion of PAL games.

If you want to play PAL games in 60Hz, the best option is to have a switch fitted (as described earlier). An alternative option which I've used is a Pro Action Replay adaptor which can bypass the check for the majority of PAL games. I've only tried PAR Version 2, but with plenty of success where the other adaptor failed.

OK cheers Abhisara (i'm in Preston also, well Hoghton just south of Preston).

Looks like i might be better getting a PAR 2 or the switch fitted then!

I assume its fit the PAL cart, switch to 50Hz, power on game, then switch to 60Hz?

Yes, that's how I used to play my PAL copy of Yoshi's Island on my modded snes. Boot the game up in 50Hz, then after the title screen where the 50/60Hz check takes place, switch it to 60Hz.
