    Retro|Spective 216: Digitiser

Thirty one years ago a decade long love affair for gamers with a love for coloured text on a black screen began...

    Retro|Spective: Digitiser

The tongue in cheek service was known for not only the scale of success it quickly attracted but also its humour, humour that often pushed the envelope of what the service would normally permit. Cancelled in 2003 by a senior editor who took over the prior year and immediately took issue with the services humour, the end of Digitiser rang a clear echo of the poor guided standpoints that saw the entire service throttled in the days when it was fighting for survival against the rise of the internet.

The site made liberal use of the Reveal button on viewers TV remotes, often revealing one of the numerous characters that had been created by the services runners - most notoriously by creator Mr Biffo

Perhaps the clearest example of the humour that accompanied the daily dose of gaming news and letters was its final message

Did you use the service and what are your memories of it?
    Most importantly...

Did you stay away from Mr T's BINS?

I met Mr. Biffo at some retro gaming event.
It was quite small scale and he was going to give a talk, but I spotted him beforehand and we spoke and he's bloody lovely.

He spoke about how he did some show at Wembley and the idiots let him take control of the jumbotron info screen...

You've really touched my black heart with this one, tuned in constantly, real irreverent approach to games. No wonder I'm addicted to the Internet, knew so many teletext pages, always fired up Turner the Worm and watched football scores refresh.

I recall the BBC version as well but it, being the BBC, lacked a graps of why Digitiser was so popular. Gamecentral was it called?

I couldn't even begin to explain to someone why the humour worked, but it somehow did and was without doubt the core reason why the site held its draw

I'll always think back fondly to the Snakes. They cussed me bad.

When we finally got a telly capable of Teletext it blew my tits clean off. I’d check the kiddy pages every morning before watching my programs and show my Granda that he didn’t have to buy the paper anymore, because all the news was already on there.

I think it played a big part in me becoming a web designer, now that I think about it.
