CCIV: Game of the Year 2010 - Round One

We've reached a point where I feel it's time to make a change in how these run. We've been running through all of gamings history for approximately four years now and as we enter the 2010's we reach a point where the digital era really expands hard. In 2024 alone there were over 19,000 games released on Steam alone highlighting how impractical using the same approach we've been using up until now would be to maintain. As much as is possible all prior years have listed every single release known regardless of how fringe of irrelevant the listing might clearly be.

So, from this point onward some curation is going to be required. If a game is missed that rings out to you that it must be considered, feel free to highlight it. I'll try to keep if fairly fluid but unless it stands out I'll skip titles that are obviously daft to include in the running. This should also help us to start steering toward the end game for Critics Club IV after what will be a clear half decade.

    So, once again...

Which of the listed games are among the best of the year and why?

    I thought AvP was phenomenal.
Three different campaigns. Predator tank, Marine FPS and Alien stealth mode.
Loved how you start the Alien campaign as a facehugger looking for someone to latch onto.
Marine campaign was ace as you could have torch OR motion sensor, making for some teeeeense shooting.

Took my big CRT monitor to a mates and we had a LAN party playing this and some other games.

Alan Wake had all the signs of being rubbish when it finally arrived but it was great.

Few big titles like Alan Wake, Bad Company 2 and Bioshock 2, also threw in for my personal favourites on the list in Alpha Protocol which had alot of fun ideas, tons of play your way taken to the max, but some poor execution in trying to make it a hybrid action game like the first Mass Effect let it down. The other is AppleJack a little xbox indiedev platform title, platform puzzler is what i would call it, just searched on how to play it nowadays and it got ported to steam in 2017.

When a little man with an apple for a head loses his dog, it marks the beginning of a grand platforming adventure deep into the heart of...Wales?

You sure you're not remembering the classic 2000 PC AVP and not the forgettable and deeply average 2010 attempt.

Loved Bad Company 2, although I think I bought it just as BF3 was coming out so didn't play as much as I should have.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking of. I even Googled "2010 AvP" to check I wasn't thinking of the wrong one. Argh!

AC Brotherhood was effing ace. Recruiting and training assassins and calling them to help you out during gameplay was amazing. Ezio is cool. Rome recreation was incredible plus base building plus great traversal and some sick combat moves.

Damn the 1 2 3 of the first 3 AC games was pretty awesome. Loved them so much.
